*Red Iron Ranch feeds most of our horses in slow feeder hay bags when they are not grazing in the summer and fall seasons. "Slow-feeding is definitely the best solution for feeding grazing animals, kept in captivity. How does it work? Well it allows only small amounts of hay to be pulled out while feeding, slowing down the consumption and allowing the digestion to work the way it is designed to. Slow-feeding best imitates the grazing action for the digestive system. " (Information provided by www.slowfeeder.com). So far we are pleased with the results. Our horses are happy, and are never waiting for their next meal.

Co-op horse boarding, starting mid May, offered southwest of Edmonton. We currently have 2-3 openings for pasture board, and one opening in the pony pen.

What is co-op horse boarding? Instead of conventional boarding, where horse owners pay a fee for all services provided by the barn owner or staff, a co-op model operates on shared responsibilities. The benefits are reduced costs, greater flexibility, and customization in horse care. Everyone works together toward a common goal, which is providing excellent horse care in a clean, safe environment. With our farm, it usually consists of doing feeding chores, or odd jobs around the farm. Boarders are asked to work 6-7 hours per month. More details are available on our page.

CO-OP BOARDING AGREEMENT

- Each boarder is expected to work 6-7 hours per month. Shift choices must be submitted by the 20th of the previous month, and will be given on a first come, first serve basis.
- Feeding chores should take 45 minutes to 1 hour, unless there is an unusual amount of work, such as blanketing. It may take longer while you are learning the routine, but regardless, feeding chores will count as 1 hour, whether you finish early, or a bit late. Horses are fed their individual meals in a group setting, so you need to be able to understand herd dynamics to do this safely. You will be assessed to see if you are capable and have the experience to do the feeding chores.
- If you are not capable, lack the experience to do doing feeding chores, or would rather do something else, there are many other odd jobs around the farm. Such as mucking pens, tidying the barn, fixing hay nets, watering plants, cleaning the barn yard, weeding, raking, ect.
- If a boarder does not fill the required hours, they will be charged an extra $20 for every hour they miss, and it will be added to the following months board.
- If a boarder works above the 6-7 hours per month, that will go towards the hours they need to put in in the following month.
