The Rice market is undergoing a profound transformation, with trade dynamics, climate change, and production decisions reshaping the sector's balance on a global scale.
Italy is also part of this evolving landscape, facing rising imports, slowing exports, and a gradual stabilization of prices following the strong market tensions experienced in recent years.
During the first quarter of 2026, Italy imported 82,485 tonnes of Rice, an increase of 29.1% year on year. Growth was driven primarily by imports from India, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, as well as from EU partners such as France and Greece. On the other hand, Italian rice exports declined in several key traditional markets, particularly Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, totaling 173,139 tonnes (-8.8% year on year). Although Italy continues to maintain a strongly positive trade balance,
Domestic market trends vary across Rice varieties. In Bologna, Arborio and Originario continue to trade above 1,200 โฌ per tonne, while Ribe Parboiled remains relatively stable at around 930 โฌ per tonne. Lower quotations are recorded for Baldo, Indica, Ribe, and similar varieties, ranging between 780 โฌ and 900 โฌ per tonne.
Developments in the Italian market are taking place within an international environment that continues to evolve. The latest estimates for the 2026/27 marketing year indicate a slight decline in global Rice production and ending stocks, while consumption continues to grow and international trade is expected to expand. This scenario ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ and a gradual reduction in inventories, despite overall supplies remaining historically high.
Alongside market dynamics, another major challenge is increasingly shaping the future of Rice production: climate change. ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ is becoming an increasingly strategic factor for a crop that requires significant irrigation resources. In many producing regions, greater rainfall variability, rising irrigation costs, and growing concerns over extreme weather events are already being observed.
As a result, international research institutions and industry stakeholders are investing more heavily in climate-smart production systems, focusing on more efficient water management, innovative agronomic practices, and Rice varieties with greater tolerance to climate-related stress. At the same time, planting decisions are becoming increasingly influenced by market conditions and profitability expectations, with potential effects on supply availability in future growing seasons.
