For generations, Champagne was all about the famous houses. But behind the bottles were the growers — the farmers who planted, pruned and harvested the grapes.

So how did their names finally make it onto the label?

Rockburn has been a Glengarry classic for as long as we can remember.

So it was very good to have winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis and GM Tim Severne through Vic Park for a catch up, bottles in hand of course.

Central Otago Pinot Noir has changed a lot over the years, but Rockburn has remained one of those names we’ve kept coming back to. A long standing favourite on our shelves, and always good to see the people behind the wines.

And a big congratulations to Malcolm on his 20th vintage at Rockburn. Quite the milestone. đŸ·

Swipe across. This ran in the Glengarry Wineletter in April 1994 more than thirty years ago and we’ve just dug it out of the archive.

On one side, a GASH cartoon: two growers squaring off over a single square metre of Burgundy dirt, one insisting he bought it fair and square last year. On the other, our Burgundy write-up, which made the same point without the shouting: in the Cîte d’Or a single vineyard can be split between more than seventy individual growers, “which must stretch neighbourly tolerance to the limits.” Still one of the best lines we’ve ever printed.

And the mad thing is none of it has dated. The Cîte d’Or is still a thin ribbon of hillside barely 40km long, carrying some of the most valuable dirt on the planet, carved into more than a thousand named parcels by centuries of inheritance. Growers still defend patches you could park a car on. The square-metre standoff is barely an exaggeration now, and it wasn’t in ’94 either.

We’ve been selling French wine, and writing about it like this, for a very long time.

There’s no revolution without wine. The French knew it ~ they stormed the Bastille, then spent the next year celebrating their freedom with fireworks, four-day feasts, and running down the street naked. (History, we promise.)

We’ve always liked to mark this occasion with a focused feature ~ all of France is on sale ~ every French bottle in the place, online and in store, from the humblest table wine to the most rarified drop of Lafite. In the spirit of the revolutionaries, we’ve liberated the prices.

6th–19th July, again online and in every store. A fortnight to stock the cellar, cook something good, and find some good company ~ exactly as the French would’ve done.
