Exactly 10 years ago we bought the farm. It was a complete miracle in so many ways and Wanda Shurlow maybe saw more in us than we even saw in ourselves. We will forever be grateful to her for trusting us with her farm and her dream!
Ten years ago today we HIT the ground running….. we dreamed, we built, we grew, and we worked and worked and worked.
Every single year we took on a giant new project- automatic water, run ins, indoor arena remodel, new stalls, hayfields replanted, new footing, an outdoor arena, a party barn, new bathroom and kitchen, a new driveway, new paint… and the list goes on and on! We… a peverbile we… as most of this work was done by one great man… my husband!
And on the other side it was me- trying to figure out how to end up in the black and keep this massive farm that we took on afloat and the bills paid and pay off chunk after chunk of what we owed. Two weeks after we opened I hosted the first birthday party and at the end of the first month we had 5 new horses and a small little lesson program up and running. The first summer we right away kicked off our camps and we’ve been going strong for 9 summers with hundreds of kids coming each year and now over 50 horses at the farm.
The barn has breathed life into so many souls. We have hosted birthday parties, people have gotten engaged and married here… we’ve done simple riding lessons and then we’ve done major life events here. I wake up each morning and I LOVE this place. I will NEVER be not thankful for the opportunity to live such an amazing life with some of the most amazing people. I’m married to the most amazing man in the world and together we have given our kids the gift of this place and taught them what it means to work hard and love big.
But ten years later I’m tired. Really tired. Yesterday, I finished 8 weeks of summer camps rolled into a few horse shows, birthday parties, sick horses, employees quitting with zero notice, hosted several non profit events… and worked so many hours it all blurs together. I have dropped the ball in many areas of my life. I’m doing A LOT but I’m not sure I’m doing anything really that well.
Today I’m taking 36 hours to go up north… just driving north to some beach somewhere and finding a hotel and I’m taking some time to really search my soul. Spending time with my FIRST LOVE… letting HIM breathe a little life into my own soul. I’m going to spend some time evaluating what needs to go and what needs to stay. I cannot continue this pace and I have come to the realization that I don’t need to nor do I want to! This ten years has been so magical…. And the next ten years hold so much more. I’m so excited to see what is in store for the farm, our family, and each person who drives up this driveway and gets to be a part of a little piece of heaven on earth.
Please pray for me these next two days… I’m not one to ever really love being alone with just myself and I can’t say I’ve ever done this. But I have big plans in store and no plans at all… so I will see where the spirit leads me and unplugging from everything else.
