How do poultry cool off when it is hot??

There are a few ways they attempt to stay cool. Panting, holding their wings out from their bodies, dust baths in cool dirt and laying in the shade.

They also will get rid of heat through their wattles, combs and feet!!

You can see the turkey cooling off in some water, something I have seen her do more than once this summer 😂

They have been getting fresh water regularly and as you can tell they enjoy it!!

Come make some butter with me 🥰 One of my Aunts blessed us and dropped off a gallon of raw milk she got 🥹 I made some butter, and I look forward to continuing to get this milk!! I am throwing around the idea of trying to make a clabber for yogurt but we’ll see 😂 One thing I noticed is I felt like this cream took longer to make butter than store bought heavy whipping cream….once you have the finished product you can add salt or leave it unsalted! What is a milk product you would like to make from scratch if you could?? Might give me some ideas for the future 😃

Another chicken saga. Chickens are very food driven and most do not like to share! One will find a tasty snack and run off so they don’t have to share with the rest of the flock 😂 With the exception of a good rooster or Mama with her chicks which in those cases they will share and call others or their chicks over to a good snack, in my experience 🥰 Watch until the end and the chicken in the backs face is hilarious! She’s like “Girl, you did not do what I think you just did!?” 😂

The Kansas heat has been brutal and it can definitely stress your animals. One treat we’ve given especially when it is very hot is frozen watermelon!

It is over 90% water. Provides all kinds of vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin A, C, B6, magnesium, potassium and other good things for your flock 😊

One super interesting thing, to me, that I found out is watermelon is one of the richest sources of L-citrulline. Which is important because it is an amino acid that can help your chickens with heat stress and help boost their immune system 🤯

The watermelon rind, white part, actually contains the highest amount of L-citrulline. So, if you wanted to enjoy the fleshy red part for yourself you can still help your flock out and give them the leftover rinds! 🥰

While the Homestead husband holds down the fort we get to visit Mimi and Gigi and lots of other family 🥰 They have a huge, magnificent garden with lots of goodies!! I dove right in and we got to work canning 😊 Today has been a full and good day. We picked beans and got covered in mud during the process (now that would’ve been quite the picture to share 😂), snapped beans, visited with lots of family and canned so many things-pickles, dilly beans, cowboy candy, more and more to still go 😍 I’ll be sharing more details about what we canned but for now enjoy this picture out our massive pile of wonderful beans, and no this was not all of them 😂 I’m so thankful they are willing to share their bounty with me and we even had another Aunt who shared with us too!! Our beans did not do good this year on the Homestead so it is a blessing to still be able to get fresh homegrown beans 💜

So it has been a while, but we have a new layer!! I do not know who is laying this egg!! Initially I thought it was a blue layer but none of my blue layers are old enough to start laying yet, so I was confused 😂 I’m thinking it’s actually more of a mint color (so olive egger). So, I do not have a hidden blue layer in my flock like I initially was thinking, but it is a beautiful egg color😍

The Homestead Mimi has some BEAUTIFUL peppers 😍 I’m planning on pickling them up, something I’ve never done but you don’t know until you try 😊 I’m gonna have to grow this Hungarian wax pepper next year! My jalopeños have honestly done not so good, but as you know my habaneros have done wonderfully! Does anyone have a trick for getting beautiful peppers like this? The Mimi isn’t sure how she got them to grow this good. She does have her peppers growing in pots and my peppers are in the ground.

I ended up buying pickling spice that was already pre-made for canning dill pickles when I made them, but I think it would be cool to make my own and have it in bulk to use! Does anyone know of a good place to buy herbs in bulk for a decent price that are good quality? I am thinking of maybe looking at an Amish store we have close by and seeing what their prices are like 😊
