We welcomed a new little guy to the farm yesterday afternoon!

Mama Charlie and baby are both doing great, and he came into the world at a stout 85.4 lbs.

Apparently, we have a bit of a naming trend going with our boys: Johnny Angel, Black Jack, and now… Slim Jim. Although around here, he’s already being called Jim, Jimmy, Jimmer, and whatever else someone comes up with.

Anyone else catch the boys’ name trend we somehow started by accident and have now brought full circle with this little guy?

A pretty simple weekend around the farm.

We finished up the walking path Friday, kept up with chores, spent Saturday visiting with old friends, and used Sunday to catch up before another week begins.

Sometimes a slower weekend is just what you need.

Around here, even the pretty projects have a practical purpose.

Dad considers this a winter prep project. A dry path to get us where we need to go even when the Arkansas mud sets in.

We put in something temporary last year, and it got us through. Most of our projects have had us out in the fields through the spring and summer, so these projects around the house really got put on the back burner.

It’s nice to finally see this one come together. It’s amazing how just a couple evenings of work have already changed the whole look of the house. The vision we’ve had for this space is coming together a little at a time.

After seeing a few new folks taking an interest in our page, we thought it might be a good time to tell you a little bit about who makes up the backbone of Shepherd’s Hill Ranch.

While we may be a small farm here in Central Arkansas now, that wasn’t always the case. Most of us were first introduced to farming in Michigan on my grandpa’s family farm. Some years ago, we started putting down roots here in Arkansas, and in 2020 we decided to jump into homesteading together.

That leap was rooted in a desire for a simpler way of life and the ability to grow our own food in a sustainable way. Since then, we’ve learned a multitude of skills that generations before us practiced regularly, before convenience took over. Our goal is to pass those skills on to the next generation—and learn plenty more along the way.

Everyone has a hand in making this place what it is. Whether it’s caring for animals, making meals, working the land, or maintaining equipment, every hand has a job.

We’re still growing, still learning, and still building little by little. We hope you’ll continue to follow along on our journey.

It’s that time of year, stocking up the hay barn for winter.

We’ve been fortunate through this drought that we haven’t had to start feeding hay yet. With predictions of a hard winter ahead, though, we’d rather be prepared.

Fresh milk available for the holiday weekend!

Madeline has been keeping us well supplied, so there is plenty available right now. If you’ve been wanting to try some, this is a great weekend to grab a gallon!

We added a new face to the farm last weekend — our new Katahdin ram.

He’s been pretty easygoing so far, and we’re hoping to keep it that way. We’ve been making a point to visit him regularly, usually with a few treats in hand, so he gets used to us being around.

Amelia has been more than happy to help with that part.

The one thing we haven’t figured out yet is his name. We’ve tossed around a few ideas, but nothing has quite stuck.
