I kind of regret not growing any sunflowers this year. These late summer sunchokes blooms are filling the void in my heart.
🌼
Sunchokes (or Jerusalem artichokes…not an artichoke at all) are a dual purpose crop for me. We get cheery blooms on long stems AND edible roots similar to a potato. They are native to the US often present in indigenous cuisines. And the flowers feed native birds and bees.
🐝
If you want to grow your own, just plant the edible root directly in the ground a few inches, no special treatment. Be careful where you plant—they get very tall and spread rapidly, giving you sunchokes for life 🙃

💛 Not flowers, but a reminder to go support farmers this week at your local farmers market 👨‍🌾
Outside of growing flowers I manage a small veg non-profit farm in Baltimore City. It been hot, humid, stormy, and exhausting this month, which is not unusual for this time of year. But it’s also the time of year in which farmers of small-scale operations start to burn-out and question our “why.” So go support local growers this season to remind them of “why” they should keep going 💛

I love when blooms start to match the sunsets 🌅 this is really just another strawflower appreciation post.

A little late-summer update… we’ve had weirdly tolerable temperatures the last two weeks. It’s been a gift, but not without Maryland’s humid hug of summer. We knocked out nearly 1,000 seedling plantings this weekend with the looming sky of torrential afternoon storms. The clouds unleashed and we were soaked. We took a break feeling slightly chilled despite the warm air. Then pressed on after the worst of it passed.

Hoping y’all enjoy the abundance of amaranth, marigold, and zinnia coming our way later this summer and fall 🌾

For someone who grows flowers, I don’t take much time to enjoy them in my own spaces. I should do it more often 🌞

Field grown overwintered feverfew is finally popping. Part of the aster family, it has a lovely earthy scent and medicinal qualities. Great for brewing in teas to reduce headaches and inflammation (hence the “fever” in it’s name)—also great in bouquets 😉
