Back Roots Farm

Back Roots Farm Where growing takes root! Our mission at Back Roots Farm is to educate, encourage, and engage learners of all ages in our community, food, and the environment.

We want to promote environmental knowledge, food access and affordability, and nurture a sense of place in our community. Back Roots Farm is a work in progress! The idea of Back Roots Farm began while founder, Caitlin Lorenc, was serving in AmeriCorps in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Lorenc was motivated to take what she learned in rural Vermont and apply it to her home town in northwest lower

Michigan. Starting in the fall of 2015, that's exactly what she did! Located on 7 acres in beautiful Benzie County, the focus of Back Roots Farm is to provide the local community with accessible, healthy, and affordable produce free from chemicals.

Garlic scapes are in the farm stand! If you just can't wait for garlic ๐Ÿง„, the scapes are a fantastic way to curb that craving. Garlic scapes are the "flowering" part of garlic and you can use them anyway you would regular garlic cloves. I'm going to try them in potato salad! ๐Ÿฅ” ๐Ÿงบ ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Yum!

We've got big news to share: the farm family is growing!!! About a week and half ago we brought home a dozen baby chicks ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿฅ. We're down to 11 now ๐Ÿ˜ฅ but they seem to be doing alright. It's been fun watching them.

(Sorry not sorry for flooding the farm page with adorable chicken photos.)

Look what we found today! Fenn wasn't sure what to do with the bat so we asked our friends at Sleeping Bear Wildlife Fund. They gave us great advice: "They can't fly from the ground so if you can scoop him up (a shovel works great) to give a.lift or help it cling to a tree, hopefully that's all it will need!"

Bats can be alarming but they are super cool and really important to our environment! Check out the link below to learn more about bats and what you can do to help protect them.
