Back Roots Farm Where growing takes root! Our mission at Back Roots Farm is to educate, encourage, and engage learners of all ages in our community, food, and the environment.

We want to promote environmental knowledge, food access and affordability, and nurture a sense of place in our community. Back Roots Farm is a work in progress! The idea of Back Roots Farm began while founder, Caitlin Lorenc, was serving in AmeriCorps in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Lorenc was motivated to take what she learned in rural Vermont and apply it to her home town in northwest lower

Michigan. Starting in the fall of 2015, that's exactly what she did! Located on 7 acres in beautiful Benzie County, the focus of Back Roots Farm is to provide the local community with accessible, healthy, and affordable produce free from chemicals.

Farm stand is stocked today - got a late start this morning. 😴 😬 Zucchini, cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes 🍅, cucumbers, jalapeno peppers, bell peppers 🫑, yellow summer squash, onions 🧅, basil, and parsley. Self serve today. Will take Senior Project Fresh tomorrow, Sunday, August 23rd until noon!

Did I mention we have a GIANT zucchini???? 😱

It's been a slow start for the farm stand this year but we're getting a few goodies! In the stand today, you'll find Hungarian hot peppers 🌶️, zucchini, yellow summer squash, a few cucumbers, and some purple beans (enjoy them like you would green beans).

Depending on the weather (heat and air quality), I'll have some green beans and raspberries tomorrow.

Self-serve farm stand this weekend. Located at 7697 Homestead Rd in Benzonia.

Garlic scapes are in the farm stand! If you just can't wait for garlic 🧄, the scapes are a fantastic way to curb that craving. Garlic scapes are the "flowering" part of garlic and you can use them anyway you would regular garlic cloves. I'm going to try them in potato salad! 🥔 🧺 🍽️ Yum!

We've got big news to share: the farm family is growing!!! About a week and half ago we brought home a dozen baby chicks 🐣🐥. We're down to 11 now 😥 but they seem to be doing alright. It's been fun watching them.
