Yesterday did not start out well. I was working on equipment and I knocked the socket set off the tailgate my pick up.

While picking tiny sockets out of the gravel, I cracked my head on the back of the dozer.

After a little bit of profanity, I made sure it was only a tiny cut. Cleaned off a little bit of blood and got back to work.

Ugh. Not a good start…

I was tempted to do third cutting of hay on part of our pasture. However, if this fall is like the last five years, it may not rain again until November. I was worried about running out of pasture so I stuck to the safe route and decided against a third cutting.

Today I opened up 18 acres for pasture. The alfalfa came back very well after a second cutting. Unfortunately, a lot of johnson grass also came in…

I spent the afternoon yesterday getting the disc mower and tractor serviced and ready for our second hay cutting. As I was talking to the tractor and getting everything greased it was starting to sound like the Robert Duvall scene from Days of Thunder.

Maybe I’m talking to the tractor too much…

My daughter and I were sorting cows this week and my hat took some shrapnel.

There was a lot of mooing during the process, I have to believe the translation was “I got his hat! I got his hat!”

My legs were absolutely covered. I was just happy there was only a few spots on my hat and luckily nothing on my face.

I was raking hay earlier this week, I stopped for a break and to check the rake. The group quickly made their way to the fence line. They were a little disappointed that I didn’t have any treats.

My bull voiced his concerns that I didn’t keep treats in the tractor tool box.

I went out to the pasture the next day and passed out a few treats. The bull must have still been pouting, he refused to take a treat. UGH. At least he doesn’t try and use me for a scratching post like my last bull.

Is anyone using turkey (or any poultry) manure on your hay fields/pastures?

Do your cows like the hay?

It seems like the long term benefits to the ground would be worth the cost/work but I’ve heard some people say their cows wouldn’t eat the grass/hay after application.

I assume the amount of tons per acre would be a factor.

We are currently composting our cow manure for a year then spreading the dry manure in the fall after the cows have been removed from the pasture. However we just don’t have enough volume to cover many acres.

Let me know your thoughts (if you’re a farmer).
