The Kit Carson County Land Company formed in 1902 with A.W. Winegar heading up the land locating business.

A portion of the October 1, 1905 Omaha Bee article features how he brought land seekers to our area and highlights the newly acquired Spring Valley Ranch.

"The cost of inspection has never been lower. We have arranged a special homeseekers' excursion rate at $10 for the round trip from Omaha, Nebraska to Burlington, Colorado, at 75 percent of first class fare, departing October 31st and November 17th.

I furnish, free of charge, sleeping accommodations aboard my private car, which remains on the track at Burlington throughout your stay. Once in Kit Carson County, $2.00 will cover all your food and local transportation. Maps of the county are yours at no cost.

Our excursion departs Tuesday evening at 8:30, arriving in Burlington at 9:00 the following morning in time for breakfast. If you have any interest whatsoever, you cannot afford to let this pass.

Land values in Kit Carson County are advancing rapidly. Those who have already purchased are watching their acres rise toward $2.00 and $3.00 per acre. The prices will continue to climb until this country reaches the stage that Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas occupy today.

The Hardt Gallery Western Art and Culture Show: 21 Western artists from pen and ink to bronze from May through August. It is wrapped around a 4 day, June 7 - June 10, historic stage coach ride from the Arikaree Breaks, north of St. Francis KS to Beecher Island, CO

The opening reception of the show is on Friday, June 5th at 6:00 pm CDT with rides on June 6th throughout the day.

Brands on the High Plains

In the early days of eastern Colorado, cattle roamed the open range. With few fences, ranchers relied on brands to prove ownership and served as an identity on the prairie.

By the 1870s, Colorado began registering brands in the official Brand Book, preserving them for generations. There are many of those early marks still in existence today, handed down as heritage symbols.

More than iron on the hide, brands told the story of survival in Kit Carson County and beyond.

Of note is the Spring Valley Ranch brand, known as the McCrillis Ranch. It is listed as "The Double Wrench" brand.
