When I’m two minutes late with her dinner. 🍽️ oh, the sass!

I’m sorry for being so quiet on here! With school starting, everything has been extra busy over the past few weeks.

Poppy is doing well! Still taking her medicine each day (reluctantly) and remaining energetic and playful. She has to be separated from her friends while she eats her food and medicine, which she doesn’t like. Other than that, she is a happy little thing!

She appears to be gaining weight and has another check at the end of August in a few weeks.

Proof that it doesn’t matter how often I groom her, she’s going to look homeless immediately after.

A little beauty time for Poppy. 💅🏻

Those shavings from her hospital stay did not want to leave! But I got most of them out. I still have to work on her head and ears. Brushing out those shavings was satisfying. 🙂‍↕️

Now the question remains as to whether we will give her a haircut to round out her current partially shaved situation or not…I haven’t decided yet.

She is doing really well on the steroids and is 100 times peppier than before! She is playful and energetic and is back to chasing us around. She is also braying VERY loudly when she sees or hears us come out of the house. I’ll try to catch a video of her doing it!

They won’t leave each other’s side. 🥹

I didn’t sleep at all, so afraid I would wake up to her down and unable to get up. But she was just as perky and happy as ever this morning. She brayed when she saw me come through the gate. 🩷

I had a wonderful long talk with Teresa with Tee-Spud Poitou Donkeys in Texas yesterday evening. She was a wealth of knowledge and I am grateful to have found a mentor for this wonderfully special breed.

UPDATE: SHE’S HOME!!!

Poppy just arrived home! After showing extreme drama loading onto the trailer (full video to come later), she finally got loaded and we just got home! She looks pretty rough. They brushed her before we got there, but she laid down in her shavings and got them all over her. Her haircut is ridiculous, but we will sort that out later.

For now, we are just happy that she is home. 🩷

Apple is happy, too. 🤎

UPDATE: POPPY LAID DOWN AND GOT UP THREE MORE TIMES WITHOUT ASSISTANCE!!

I didn’t receive an update yesterday, which I took as a good sign. And boy was it! This afternoon, UGA called and said that between Wednesday evening and this morning, Poppy laid down and stood up THREE WHOLE TIMES on her own!! They said they feel very confident in her ability to get up on her own and that we are still good to pick her up tomorrow!

She will continue with an oral steroid for another month or so, as well as special feed for the foreseeable future.

We can’t wait to bring her home!!!!

POPPY UPDATE: SHE LAID DOWN AND STOOD UP ON HER OWN AGAIN!!!

Poppy is getting her s***k back!! UGA called me this evening and said that Poppy laid down and got up on her own for the second day in a row! They led her out of her stall for a weight check and she fought them hard - which I’m actually happy about - and they weren’t able to complete it. When they led her back her to her stall and she realized where she was going, she put on a FULL STOP and fought. She did not want to go back in! She even laid down on the sidewalk outside of her stall in an act of protest. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Despite everyone’s best efforts, she REFUSED to budge until she finally resigned and got up and walked in.

She is transitioning to oral steroids now (she’s been getting them via IV).

We get to bring her home on Saturday!!

Our bill is due on Saturday. We’ve raised $1,800 of our $5,000 goal, which is amazing! Thank you to everyone who has donated or shared. If you can please share or donate even a little, there’s still time and it is SO SO SO appreciated. Every little bit helps tremendously!

Let’s bring Poppy home!!!

***pictured is Poppy and our farm cat, Heidi, from this winter. Many people have made comments about Poppy’s coat and how shaggy it is. She actually receives regular grooming and was clipped this past fall (you’re not actually supposed to clip Poitous) to assess her body condition. We hired a professional (Miranda at ) to come out and give her the royal treatment. 👑 she did not like the clippers, but did great overall! Her coat has grown SO MUCH already!***

UPDATE: POPPY NEEDS YOUR HELP! 🙏🏻😭

Hi everyone,

We really need some support for Poppy. She was able to lay down and stand up yesterday morning with the help of some of the vet students, but this morning she laid down and could not get back up. She rocked back and forth several times and tried her hardest, but was unsuccessful. She had to be lifted up using the sling. This tells us she is still too weak to come home.

Other than that, she is great once she is up! She is eating and drinking and walking around. She has started steroids and is tolerating them well! Her prognosis remains good at this time.

Her heart rate is still elevated. They think this is likely due to stress, but they are monitoring it.

She is enjoying the fat supplement and eating it well! This is great news, as it will help her gain weight in a healthy, quick manner.

We need help with her go fund me. If you could please share or donate (or both!), that would be incredibly helpful. We are trying to raise $5,000. Her current bill is almost $4,000 and she is going to be there for several more days.

UPDATE: SHE LAID DOWN AND STOOD UP (with assistance)!

I got a call from UGA this morning. Poppy finally laid down around 4 AM and was able to stand up with some assistance at 6:30 AM. They said this was a positive thing, but they want to see her repeat this with no assistance a few more times, which I completely agree with because we are unable to help her on her own once she is down. I don’t want to risk bringing her home and being placed in this position again. But the fact that she was able to stand without the sling is a HUGE deal!! They had to use some manpower to support her.

We talked about her diet and they said they would like her to ideally put on 200 pounds. They are going to try a special fat supplement and see if she likes it. She tends to be a selective eater, so we will see if she likes it. Fingers crossed she does!!

They said the one thing that is concerning is that her heart rate has remained elevated. They are not sure why. It could possibly be the stress (that’s what I’m thinking, at least).

Other than that, all good remarks! She got her first steroid treatment last night. She is tolerating it well so far. Let’s hope it stays that way!

Here’s a little video of Poppy and her companion, Apple **from last summer**. They love each other. I hope they can be reunited soon.
