Which Amino Acids Are Best for You? BCAAs vs. EAAs
BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) are just 3 aminos — leucine, isoleucine, valine — the ones most directly tied to muscle protein synthesis. EAAs (essential amino acids) include all 9 aminos your body can't make on its own, BCAAs included, plus histidine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan.
The catch: muscle building needs all 9 essentials present, not just the 3. Studies now show EAAs outperform BCAAs alone for muscle protein synthesis, since your body can't build muscle with only leucine, isoleucine, and valine — it needs the full set.
Bottom line: if you're already eating enough protein, neither is essential. If you're supplementing, EAAs are the smarter buy over BCAAs.
