It is possible to build a profitable farm in a small town. We still sell 70% of our vegetables within our county in Wyoming (population 26,000) and we're still growing.
🌱 BUILD LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS
• Learn every customer's name.
• Ask questions and get to know them.
• Remember what they like to buy.
• Thank them for their support.
• In a small town, people buy YOU before they buy your product.
🥕 GROW A DIVERSE RANGE OF HIGH-PROFIT CROPS
• Grow enough variety for customers to skip the grocery store.
• Too few crops makes selling difficult.
• Too many crops creates unnecessary complexity.
• Aim for the "Goldilocks Zone" of diversity.
• I like growing 20-30 crops throughout the season.
❄️ HARVEST AS CLOSE TO YEAR-ROUND AS POSSIBLE
• It's easier to sell more to existing customers than find new ones.
• Extend your season with cold-hardy crops.
• Use greenhouses and row cover to protect crops.
• Less competition = higher prices.
• The customer you earn in July can still buy from you in January.
P.S. If you live in a small town but want to start or scale a farm like this, I might be able to help! My Backyard Farming 101 program is currently helping people achieve this all over the country by working with me directly.
