In 2008 and 2009, during the worst economy since the Great Depression, Ohio and the entire nation was suffering. In Dayton, home of Buckeye Vodka, numerous businesses suffered and plants closed. Seeking to be a part of the solution, brother-in-law Tom Rambasek, brothers Jim and Chris Finke, and good friend and CFO Marty Clarke founded Crystal Spirits, LLC and developed the Buckeye Vodka brand from inception to finished product. Our dreams were realized in 2011, when we first brought Buckeye Vodka to market. We believe in the old adage ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and we’re committed to making a difference by investing locally to build a business that creates jobs and make a positive contribution to our local, state, and national economy. With as much Buckeye pride as we have, there was never really another option. In this behind-the-scenes distillery tour, Tom shares why Ohio corn has been at the heart of Buckeye Vodka from day one.

Not only does it create a naturally gluten-free vodka, but it also delivers the smooth profile and subtle sweetness that have become signatures of the product.

The farmers growing the corn we rely on are an important part of every bottle we produce, and we’re proud to support an industry that has been part of Ohio’s story for generations.

Fifteen years later, we’re still proudly making Buckeye Vodka the same way - distilled and bottled in Dayton, crafted from Ohio-grown corn, and produced by a family-owned, independently operated company that remains committed to the Buckeye State.

It’s hard to put into words what this feature means to us.

A huge thank you to the Dayton Business Journal and especially Lauren Steen for taking the time to tell the Buckeye Vodka story so thoughtfully.

As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, seeing our journey shared through the lens of the city and region we love is incredibly meaningful.

Fifteen years ago, brothers Jim and Chris Finke, brother-in-law Tom Rambasek, and best friend Marty Clarke set out to build something right here in Dayton.

They believed Ohio deserved a high-quality vodka made locally, from Ohio-grown corn, at a price people could feel good about.

What started with 2,500 cases in our first year has grown to more than 10,000 cases annually, available in all 481 Ohio liquor stores and recognized as Ohio’s top-selling craft vodka.

What makes us most proud isn’t the growth.

It’s that after 15 years, we’re still family-owned, still independent, still distilled and bottled in Dayton, and still surrounded by an incredible team and community that believes in what we’re building.

To everyone who has picked up a bottle, ordered Buckeye Vodka at a bar or restaurant, shared us with a friend, or supported us along the way - thank you. You are the reason this story exists.

If anyone has earned the right to have a favorite way to drink Buckeye Vodka, it’s Jim Finke, CEO and co-founder of Buckeye Vodka.

Fifteen years ago, Jim, his brother, his brother-in-law, and their best friend started Buckeye Vodka with a simple goal: create a high-quality Ohio-made vodka they could be proud of.

Today, Buckeye Vodka is still family owned, still independently operated, and still distilled and bottled right where it all began in Dayton, Ohio.

As for Jim’s favorite way to enjoy it? He likes it “Buck Naked” in his take of a dirty martini.

His pro tip starts before the vodka ever hits the glass.

Fill your martini glass with ice water and let it chill while you build the drink.

Add a touch of vermouth, swirl it around the glass, then pour it out.

In a shaker, add three ounces of Buckeye Vodka (though Jim will tell you a little more never hurt anybody), plenty of ice, and shake until it’s ice cold.

Pour into the chilled glass and finish with a lemon twist and blue cheese olives.

After 15 years, it’s still the drink he reaches for and still the product he’s proud to put his name behind.
