Having your own food source and knowing how to RAISE that food and how to PROCESS that food into meals will never be “outdated”

And goats!!

And goats!!

🚨 Breaking livestock nutrition news: sheep are still ruminants.

You can buy the fanciest show feed on the market. Add the top dress. Add the supplement. Add the oils, powders, drenches and whatever other magic fairy dust is supposed to make one look like a million bucks.

But if you’re skimping on hay, you’re skipping the foundation.

Sheep need roughage.

Good-quality forage supports normal rumen function, chewing and saliva production, and the microbial population responsible for breaking down feed. And when that rumen is functioning the way it should, your sheep is in a much better position to actually utilize the nutrients you’re spending all that money on.

In other words: enough good hay can help your expensive supplements actually have a chance to do their job.

You cannot out-supplement poor rumen management.

So if the ration consists of 14 ingredients, $9 worth of top dress a day and three sad pieces of hay…

Buy the sheep some hay. 😂

Feed the rumen first. Then get fancy.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Some of the best decisions start with everybody else wondering what the heck you're doing.

Try something different.

Take the risk.

Trust what you see.

Playing it safe rarely changes the game.

When I first heard that research had shown that this was an outdated idea, I decided to do f***ls on my bucks. I had one that was dying because the dewormers no longer worked in our herd back then. Although eggs covered the slide on his f***l, I could only find a few eggs in the samples from other goats. Although he died, the others were totally fine.

Peace out Cher

Peace out Cher

The feed bill got just a smidgeon smaller this morning. As a responsible breeder, there are always those animals that just don’t fit into our program that we need to send down the road….most were due to not having gotten bred last fall (not for lack of trying) for their second year in a row. Unless something goes horribly wrong, we give our does 2 breeding years to get settled, if you don’t breed by the end of the second year, you don’t stay.
