It’s during breeding season that you realize that animals are NOT people 😂 Our bucks are fully in heat and ready to service whatever they can find - even if it’s another buck!

One question we get often is, do bucks smell during mating season? The answer is YES! Alot! But its part of the process and we love having our own bucks because we can pick the genetics we desire and take the proper bio-security measures that can be an issue when using a stud from other farms.

These boys will be put to work soon on our does and ewes and we will be having kids and lambs in April 2027!

If you are looking for well-bed, well-raised, well-cared for animals to add to your farm or homestead, please reach out to us to be added to our Spring 2027 waiting list!

There are so many truly magical moments in farming.

Yes, it is hard physically. Yes, the weather is often more foe than friend. And yes, the margins are slim and sometimes non-existent. But those tough aspects are countered with incredible purpose and richness.

We have found the rewards far outweigh the risks and are looking forward to this next season of our farming journey here in the Dexter community!

If you’ve never had baby ginger, you are missing out! We had a beautiful morning to harvest it yesterday at The Dixboro Project Gardens.

We source organic ginger seed from Hawaii and plant it inside starting in March. After it sprouts and the weather warms up, it gets planted outside. The first four months it does nothing but send up shoots and leaves to create solar shields to store energy. Then the last couple months it sends that energy down into the rhizomes to create the big, beautiful ginger fruit.

Baby Ginger is harvested when it’s still young, pink, and tender. Unlike the Ginger at the grocery store, it does not have the brown paper skin or the strong bitey taste. It is incredibly fresh and bright. Fresh baby ginger can store in the refrigerator for two weeks, but it can be frozen for up to a year.

The leaves and stalks can also be used for teas and stocks and soups because they carry that ginger flavor.

Growing a tropical crop in Michigan takes some work, but in this case it’s worth every effort. This ginger was grown at the Dixboro Project so keep an eye out for it on their fall menu!!

We have lots of updates to share but the biggest one is Farmer Rich's recent surgery. Thanks to some rowdy bucks last fall he's been dealing with foot pain for almost a year. He had a heel fracture and torn tendon fixed this past week and has traded his tractor for a knee scooter for 6 weeks. We're grateful it's something that can be repaired and that it happened AFTER the move! Please pray for a smooth recovery and full healing - and for Farmer Cindy as she farms solo this fall! At least our lives are never boring :)

Just a little glimpse inside the chaos that is the mind of a farmer!

In our defense, farming comes with a million variables, so extreme flexibility and a healthy dose of optimism are basically job requirements. Even the best moments are often followed by unexpected circumstances that threaten to unravel the whole day!

But somehow, we wouldn’t have it any other way :)
