Mugshot Monday!

Once again I didn’t grab many photos this week. Here’s a video from yesterday showing the juvenile emu pick at me just about as much as the pick at Rooster.

I seriously don’t know how this guy has so much patience as a six month old puppy. Today he once again snuck into the juvenile emu field while I was at work. When I came home and pulled up to my gate I noticed Rooster was in the baby emu field. I was immediately concerned because they were all running up and down the far fenceline. I once again doubted him, thinking he was chasing them, as I would expect a puppy might do.

I was wrong. He was just trotting along in the middle of the mob, one of the gang. When they would reach one corner of the field, they would all turn and go trotting the other way. I watched for several laps and never once did I see him try to harm the babies. It was just a bunch of kids having fun. They finally noticed me sitting there and everyone came over to say hi.

Rooster stayed with the babies until I came down to feed everyone and this is how I found them 😍☺️

Rooster did something today he hasn’t done before, he figured out how to get in to the juvenile emu field by himself. At this point in his development I typically only leave him in with the birds under supervision. When I know I can fully trust him I plan to create access points to each field for him.

He wants to check on his babies so badly he figured out how to get into the irrigation ditch and shimmy under the fence to get into their field.

Rooster officially turned six months old this weekend. He has been the best addition to the farm in a long time. I had lost close to 100 birds to predators this spring prior to deciding to get a LGD and have not lost a single bird since he came to the farm. It has been fascinating watching his natural instincts develop.

He has the absolute best temperament around the big birds that I could ask for and loves everyone. He is growing like a w**d, weighed him today and he’s at 77 pounds. I expect him to be over 100 pounds when he finishes growing.

Darwin really has a beef with Rooster, she hunts him down 🤣🤦‍♀️. Luckily even the other emu will stand up for him and help put Darwin in her place, lol

I got all of the juvenile emu moved to the big growout field this week and a couple of the bigger rhea. The rest of the rhea will be moved over once a little bigger. Rooster was happy to get to visit with his babies tonight now that everyone is getting settled in.
