It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the loss of one my original mob of four. Woo was brutally attacked along with another young adult female by a loose dog from the neighbor’s who dug under the fence and began attacking them for sport. Thankfully my other neighbor saw the attack occurring and called me but by the time I got there the damage was done. Both my poor emu had broken legs and horrible injuries that resulted in them having to be immediately put down.
Woo was a part of my original mob who included Five, Showoff, Yellow, and Woo. Woo originally was sold as a chick but the first owner couldn’t keep her. At less then six months old i went to California to haul her home. She at that time had a torsed leg that wasn’t there as a chick but she was getting around well and pain free. I promised her she would always have a home here for as long as she could get around comfortably and she re-joined the mob.
She’s always been my special mob member. Not the brightest bulb maybe, but always sweet and by far had the best hair-do of all my emu. I never hatched any of her eggs because of her leg issues. Around her third year of laying she developed a bad habit of plucking feathers off the backs of the other emu to cover up the eggs and after a couple of winters of bald backed emus, she had to make the move up to the front field with the juveniles. She never laid another egg again but seemed happy enough keeping watch over the younger crowd and I kept my promise she would always have a home here if she was comfortable with her bum leg. She’s been a prominent figure in the front pasture, seen by anyone arriving on the farm.
I am so sorry your life was cut so traumatically short Woo Woo. Your goofy run will be missed.
Also, a police report has been made on the person who failed to keep their dog under control resulting in the death of both emu.
I am sorry as well to everyone who had contacted me in the last 24 hours, I have been dealing with this and because all the emu are highly stressed, no visitors to the farm will be allowed today.
Edit: also I should also clarify the dog was not owned by my neighbor. It was someone who was visiting the neighbor who decided to allow his dog to run free and un-supervised. Hopefully it won’t return and thankfully it wont continue to be next door with access to do this again.
