Day 23 — Don’t Forget the Old Skills

Growing food is only part of the story.

For most of history, people also knew how to preserve what they grew.

Canning.
Drying.
Fermenting.
Freezing.

These skills allowed families to enjoy their harvest long after the growing season ended.

Tomatoes became sauces.
Cucumbers became pickles.
Herbs were dried for winter meals.

Nothing was wasted.

Preserving food was simply part of the rhythm of life.

Today many of those skills are being rediscovered.

Because when you grow your own food, it only makes sense to learn how to save it too.

Let’s get back to basics.

Day 22 — How Secure Is Our Food System?

Most of us are used to grocery stores being full.

Produce from across the country.
Food shipped from around the world.
Everything available year-round.

But something many people don’t realize is how dependent that system is on constant transportation and supply chains.

Trucks delivering every day.
Warehouses restocking constantly.
Stores replacing what’s sold almost immediately.

If that system slows down or gets disrupted for any reason, shelves can empty faster than most people expect.

That’s not meant to cause fear.

It’s simply a reminder of something our grandparents understood well:

Growing even a small portion of your own food adds resilience.

A few plants.

A small garden.

Some herbs on the porch.

Gardens don’t replace the food system…

But they do give families a little more control over what ends up on their table.

Let’s get back to basics.
