Summer’s end nears.

Spot the Summer Triangle! ✨️✨️✨️ At this time every year, the distinctive three-cornered pattern is formed by the bright stars Vega, Altair, and Deneb.

The three stars of the Summer Triangle appear similar in brightness. Vega in the constellation Lyra the Lyre is the brightest of the trio, and the 5th brightest of all stars.

Altai is the 2nd brightest member of the Summer Triangle and the 13th brightest star.

The 20th brightest star is Deneb, which marks the tail of Cygnus the Swan. Whereas Vega and Altair are 25 and 17 light-years respectively—Deneb is much farther away, an estimated 2,600 light-years from Earth.

Tonight, the CAT NIGHTS begin! 🐱 A rather obscure old Irish legend said that a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time (August 17), she couldn’t regain her human form. This bit of folklore also gives us the saying, “A cat has nine lives.”

Traditionally, we call the September Moon the “Corn Moon.” Corn was ready to harvest at this time. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver came across this Native American term during his travels. Similarly, the Western Abenaki called this the Corn Maker Moon, and the Dakota, the Corn Harvest Moon.

However, you’ll also see that there’s a special astronomical name for this Moon: the “Harvest Moon.” This refers to the Full Moon closest to the September equinox. In 2026, the brilliant Full Harvest Moon is on Saturday, the 26th of September, reaching full illumination at 12:49 p.m. ET It will appear full for 3 days so start looking early if the weather is clear!

✨ The Perseid Meteor Shower is peaking, and we might just see some "Rainbow Meteors" lighting up the night sky! ☄️🌈

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Aug 11th - Wednesday, Aug 12th. The Perseids are known as one of the best and brightest meteor showers of the year, but did you know that meteors can actually glow in different colors?

The stunning colors you see aren't just for show—they tell us exactly what these space rocks are made of as they burn up in our atmosphere! 🚀

Here is the cosmic chemistry behind the colors:

🔴 Oxygen/Nitrogen: Red

🟡 Iron: Yellow

🟣 Calcium: Purple

🟠 Sodium: Orange

🟢 Magnesium: Blue/Green

Tips for viewing:
Find a dark spot away from city lights, lie back, give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the dark, and look up! No telescopes needed. 🔭❌
