"Barn Critters" Day 17... Heron
We see the Great Blue Heron hang out around our ponds a lot. They hunt for the fish and the frogs and reptiles. They can be a nuisance if you want to keep the fish in your pond, otherwise they're pretty to look at and interesting to watch.

"Barn Critters" Day 16... Opossum
Opossum or "Possum" as we call them, are good to have around. They eat a large number of ticks, insects and rodents. They also clean up decaying animals & rotting fruit. (Just be sure to keep your garbage cans secure!) These little guys are currently living in the apple orchard of our neighbor, Heaton Hill Farm. Thanks for sending us the pic & video!

"Barn Critters" Day 15... Red Tailed Hawk
This is another bird we see around hay time a lot. You'll see them flying around, perched on fences or in trees using their sharp eyes to catch any little animal running from the hay field while we mow. They love to pray on snakes, mice rabbits and any other small animals.

"Barn Critters" Day 13...Deer
Everywhere we go we see deer crossing roads or grazing in fields. On the farm we run into them quite often. We especially have to watch for newborns when mowing hay. The babies hunker down and hide instead of jumping up and running. Sometimes they tear up our fences by jumping over them but mostly they're just fun to watch.

"Barn Critters" Day 12...Bats
We never think about bats living around or near us. These little creatures often stay in our shop where we keep our tractors and equipment. Sometimes if we're working late at night we might catch a glimpse of one flying overhead. They also love to eat insects which is a plus for us.

"Barn Critters" Day 11...Fox
Our segment is called "Barn Critters" but probably should have been "Farm Critters". We often see animals running through the woods or a field. This little fox was running far away so we barely got a picture of it. More than likely he was stalking the neighbors chickens.

"Barn Critters" Day 10... Turkeys
We have plenty of wild turkeys running around our property. They roost in the trees, nest on the ground, and live in flocks. They have excellent vision and can fly & run really fast to escape predators. We've seen as many as 100 at a time but usually around 20-25.

"Barn Critters" Day 9... Racoons These little devils are so smart! We recently had one coming to the barn, struggling to open the feed bin (and succeeding), unscrewed the lid to the cookie jar (treats for the animals) and eating them all! Definitely a little menace! !
