Starting about May 1, our showman was up early before school to get her show calves in under the fans and feed them.

This week, she’s attending the MU Animal Science Academy, and left the rest of us in charge. This bull calf’s first outing is in two weeks. He has really nice hair, so we are rinsing to keep him cool as it has heated up this week.

Over the last few years we have moved to this style of creep feeding, using full troughs inside of a pen with a calf gate. We still have some of the upright feeders but this method allows all the calves to eat at once. We hand feed them twice a day.

It’s spraying season. We work hard every spring to hand-spray the multiflora rose, honey locust sprigs, and buck brush. We clip and pour Tordon on cedar sprigs too. Jim has been out spraying every evening that it doesn’t rain the last several weeks. It doesn’t take many years of neglect for some of these plants to take over the pastures and fence lines.

We have one pasture that we’ve been spraying for thistles. This pasture has many mature Elm trees; they are beautiful and provide a great canopy for shade.

Two cows for sale… just kidding.

We have cows from time to time that are a little more aggressive towards the grain in the back of the Kubota. Some are old show heifers, but not always.

These two regular herd cows have been annoying me separately since they calved. They were in two different groups that we merged together to be with a bull. And I realized tonight, as they were helping themselves to their unfair share, that these two cows are maternal sisters. It must be a genetic personality trait!

13M is out on pasture at the Hub with a group of 22 cows. There is a corral where four pastures meet for easy pasture rotation.

13M’s mother is a Dam of Distinction and he is the second of her bull calves that we have used. 16K is a Ridge 254G son who was a stud from day one, and we used him for two years. We have two 16K daughters in production.

Booster shots of pink eye vaccine on the heifers today. We use a vaccine developed by our veterinarian to combat local strains.

Our fall herd was moved this morning to their summer pasture. Fresh grass, shade trees and a light breeze were waiting for them.

Eight cows and two bred heifers will begin calving in September; bred to CH Premier, Stellpflug Next Step, Benchmark, Churchill Red Thunder, and Sure Bet Z002.
