In the spring of 2025 we got our first cane of Stellpflug Next Step semen mid-way through the breeding season. So we only used it on two cows, including 32L. She had a nice bull calf that will be available in April. She is bred back to Next Step.

32L is a three-year-old daughter of Validated B413 out of a Tough daughter. You can always pick 32L out of the lineup at the trough because her tail skims the ground.

Our fall mamas at chore time tonight.

We’ve moved the fall pairs to the pasture where they will spend the fall and winter; it has a great calf shed that the calves are getting used to.

Movin’ out!

Our weaned heifers will need to be out of the way for a couple days as we make some improvements to the corral they normally come into. They had to be trailed to a different pasture that had water access.

We’re blessed with rain today; our fall pastures need a boost. We have been supplementing a few groups with hay the last few weeks. We’re hoping there are several weeks with enough warmth and moisture in the growing season to supplement pastures.

The seasons, they are finally changing. A little bit too fast for my liking.

Last Saturday afternoon I melted on the bleachers watching a Little League game in 90 degree heat. Wednesday morning, it was 58 degrees and I needed a jacket.

Fall is definitely a welcome sight, but I’m keeping those medicated crumbles on stand-by for my weaned calves.

77J and her mother Liberty 117E are both dark cherry red. It’s no surprise that 77J’s bull calf is the darkest red of the fall crop so far.

I like to make sure and get a headcount on all the calves at least once a day. Sometimes as newborns, they will be curled up somewhere and I just can’t find them.

This heifer was hanging out in the picture pen; easy enough to spot her. She was ready for her close-up! 📸

Twenty-five of our mature Hereford cows coming up on this drizzly morning. They sure are pretty. 🤩
