As our Father’s Day sale on whole, pasture-raised chickens continues, we thought we’d tell you a little about the chickens behind our chicken.
The breed we raise wasn’t chosen by accident. Every aspect of our farm is guided by intentional decisions, and the chickens we grow are no exception. Here’s why we chose Kosher Kings and why we believe they’re such a great fit for our farm. The Chickens Behind Our Chicken:
Several years ago, we made the decision to raise Kosher King chickens for our meat birds. It wasn’t a random choice—it was a deliberate one, based on how we believe food should be raised.
They’re local.
One of our goals when we began to “Grow R Own” food was to reduce the distance our food travels before it reaches our table. Our chicks come from Freedom Ranger Hatchery in Reinholds, Pennsylvania, allowing us to pick them up directly from the hatchery the day after they hatch.
Instead of being shipped across the country, they arrive at our farm with minimal stress and are settled into their new home right away.
They’re calm and easy to raise.
Kosher Kings have a balanced temperament. They’re not lethargic birds that spend their lives parked at a feeder, but they’re also not flighty or aggressive. Their calm nature makes them enjoyable to work with and well-suited to life on pasture.
They’re slower-growing birds.
While many commercial meat chickens reach processing weight in about 42 days, our birds are typically raised for around 12 weeks. This slower growth results in tender meat that is lower in saturated fat and higher in omega-3s than many faster-growing breeds, while also producing birds that are exceptionally well-suited to life on pasture.
They’re built for pasture.
Kosher Kings thrive in free-range environments, which is exactly how we raise them. Our birds are moved to fresh pasture daily, giving them access to bugs, worms, grubs, grass, and other vegetation while allowing them to express their natural behaviors.
Their diet is supplemented with a certified non-GMO feed from Wholesome Harvest, providing balanced nutrition while supporting the healthy growth of the birds.
