Love this old cowboy. Best dad and grandpa.
Tim Nielsen may have joined Fall River Feedyard a little over a year ago, but he certainly didn’t come without experience.
A lifelong cattleman and experienced cowboy, Tim previously worked as a pen rider and spent time doctoring and processing cattle at another feedyard. Today, he’s a member of our Feed Mill Team, where he has enjoyed learning a different side of the business — rations, feeding and everything that goes into getting the right feed in front of cattle each day.
And he’ll do whatever it takes to make sure it gets there.
We’ve watched Tim climb out of his feed truck to clean bunks before feeding, making sure cattle receive the quality ration he’s delivering. Snow, rain or a bunk that simply needs attention — if there’s a job to be done, Tim is willing to do it. Usually with a smile, and quite possibly a quick-witted comment to go along with it.
Ask Tim who has inspired him most, though, and he’ll take you back a generation. His grandfather immigrated to the United States from Denmark at just 18 years old. “The faith and courage it took to leave your life and family behind and start a new life in a foreign country is inspiring,” Tim said. “He and my grandmother raised 10 kids, and he was proud to be a citizen of the U.S. I guess that’s where I get my faith and patriotism from.”
If you’ve ever seen the American flag flying from the front of Tim’s truck, now you know there’s a story behind it.
Away from the feedyard, Tim enjoys cooking and baking, although he describes himself as a “basic meat and potato guy.” His favorite way to enjoy beef? Ground beef in a skillet with beans and seasonings, eaten as-is, sloppy joe style or wrapped in a soft burrito shell.
But horses, cattle and family are where you’ll really find Tim at home. He and his wife, Teresa, have been married 43 years — “and yes, to each other,” as Tim is quick to clarify. 😊 They have two adult children and two grandchildren. Both of their children and spouses are ranchers, with one family living about an hour north and the other an hour and a half south. That keeps “Mrs. T” and Tim plenty busy traveling in both directions to lend a hand whenever they’re needed.
“We are happiest being astride a good horse and looking at the backside of cows,” Tim said.
When they aren’t working at home, riding horses or spending time with family, they enjoy rodeos, little road trips or simply sitting quietly on the patio enjoying each other’s company.
Experienced cowboy – dedicated feed truck driver – horseman – family man – patriot – and a guy who isn't afraid to climb out of the truck and get his hands dirty when the job calls for it. We’re awfully glad Tim Nielsen chose to bring his experience, humor and willingness to work to Fall River Feedyard. He’s one of the Faces that makes our feedyard what it is.
