Pumpkins are in Hixton! Between deer and lack of rain the stacking varieties did not produce this year. However, there are plenty of orange pumpkins!

Farmā€™n ainā€™t easy!

It was an exciting start. Planted our pumpkins June 4 using our new no-till planter. Changed the field location, beginning a new 3 year crop rotation with cover crops and sweet corn.

It was a wet June just under 7ā€ of rain but half of that came on June 10. July was hot and dryā€¦ only 1.8ā€. August was hot and dryā€¦ only 1.2ā€ on the 25th. Pumpkins needed more rain in July and August.

Deer in Fall Coulee continue to enjoy our pumpkinsā€¦ we like to hunt and donā€™t want to build fence, so the trade off is we sacrifice some pumpkin crop to the deer herd. They seem to especially like the decorative pumpkins.

W**d control was a challenge. Spent hours and sweat equity trying to control water h**p.

We do have a good amount of traditional jack-o-lanterns, mini whites, and edible spaghetti squash and we plan to stock the Hixton wagon next weekend September 18-20.

Happy Earth Day šŸŒŽ

Weā€™ve had a logging crew working the past week to implement our oak savanna reclamation project! Did you know the majority of the driftless/coulee region used to be prairies and oak savannaā€™s?

Releasing the crowded white oaks makes the woods look very open at the moment, but like many conservation effortsā€¦ itā€™s a long game! This will make for great turkey nesting and deer forage. In future years we will be able to manage most of this area with prescribed fire, a natural practice to help enhance the native landscape!
