About Our Farm

From Crops to Cattle

In 2001 we took ownership of what had been a successful cropping operation and continued to farm the land that way for several years, raising a few head of beef for our own freezer. With five growing boys we went through a lot of groceries, and, we valued knowing where our food came from. As it turned out our friends and family did, too! When people discovered

that we raised beef on our family farm, the first question many of them asked was “Is it grass-fed…?” As we researched what that meant we became more and more convinced of the many benefits of pastured meats— to the animals, the consumer and the environment. We began thinking about new ways to steward the land we owned and purposed to learn more about sustainability and regenerative land practices. We are grateful for the mentoring of friends and experts at Michigan State University as we’ve made the journey from crops to cattle. In 2011 we made a full transition to a 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef operation and since then it has been our mission and vision at JNelson Farms to provide a nutritious, responsibly raised, superior product to our customers. Our carefully selected black angus and red angus cattle are especially well-suited for life in lush pastures, enjoying supplemental hay in carefully managed paddocks on our 280+ acre farm headquartered in Hope, Michigan. We are certified with the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) as a livestock operation.

Are you new to the idea of purchasing beef directly from a local farm? If so, you probably have some unanswered questions!

The most popular scenario is for the end customer to purchase beef from a farmer based on the hanging weight of the animal (which includes the skeletal structure, excess fat, etc of the animal, by the way). You make two payments, one to the farmer for their "price per pound hanging weight" and a second one to the processor. You have a little more control over the cut instructions but you also get everything in, say, a 1/4 cow whether you like it or not! The price per pound can vary greatly based on how the livestock were raised.

Over the years we've looked for ways to simplify the process for our customers and have settled on a slightly different model. Our on-farm cold storage makes it possible to maintain inventory and fill orders all year long, usually within a couple of days! You can order by-the-cut or fill your freezers up with a bundle. You can order online or swing by our market building to purchase Cash & Carry beef at your convenience. Our prices include 100% grassfed & grass-finished beef, processing and vacuum packaging so you only ever make one payment to us for the finished product. There really is no "middle man" or extra logistics when you shop directly with us!

Still have questions...? Check out our website. We challenge you to come up with a question that isn't already on our FAQ tab! 😉

Anybody in our area missing this sweet baby…? He showed up yesterday at the farm and follows us everywhere. He’s clearly missing his people!

We do our best to mimic nature here on the farm, but it still feels particularly magical when Mother Nature takes over the schedule and instinctively does what she does.
