Did you know cattle play a vital role in fighting food waste?

In 2022, California alone turned more than 18.5 million tons of food-processing leftovers into livestock feed. That’s the same weight as 50 Empire State Buildings, kept out of landfills in just one year, in just one state.

Cattle can turn sugar beet pulp, cottonseed, almond hulls, bakery byproducts, and culled fruits or vegetables into beef. Food people can’t or won’t eat becomes part of a balanced meal instead of more landfill.

And it’s better for the environment. Sending those byproducts to a landfill creates about 60% MORE emissions than feeding them to cattle.

We’re headed to Kuner Feedlot today to meet Luis Garcia!

Luis serves as a Cattle Department Manager with Five Rivers and has been part of the team for 7 years.

When asked what makes him passionate about the industry, Luis shared:
“I make decisions in cattle management with responsibility and care, often thinking of each animal as if it were destined for my own table. This mindset motivates me to ensure animals perform at their best through thoughtful, high-quality management.”

Outside of work, Luis enjoys hunting, competing in regional baseball and softball leagues, and manages the Kuner Feedlot softball team, who are the current champions! He also loves snowboarding and hiking with his wife Camila and their Rottweiler, King Camo.

Did you know methane and CO₂ behave very differently in the atmosphere?

Burning fossil fuels releases carbon that was locked underground for millions of years, and that CO₂ lingers for centuries.

Methane from cattle is part of a natural carbon cycle and breaks down in about ten years. Its carbon isn't new; it comes from the plants cattle eat, which pulled that carbon from the air in the first place.

According to EPA data, beef cattle account for just 2% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle's impact has been blown out of proportion for far too long.

Today, we’re excited to introduce Gage McDonald, the Feed Manager at Cimarron Feeders in Texhoma, Oklahoma!

Gage has been part of our team for nearly four years, but he has been around cattle his entire life.

When asked what he enjoys most about working at Five Rivers, Gage answered, “Doing my part in creating a quality product that helps feed the world.” He also appreciates the unique role cattle play in our food system, turning forages that might otherwise go to waste into a high-quality product we all enjoy.

When Gage isn’t making sure the cattle at Cimarron are fed and well cared for, you can usually find him outdoors hunting, fishing, or golfing.

Did you know grazing cattle is one of the most effective land management tools we have?
Well-managed grazing both raises beef and benefits the land.

- Reduced wildfire risk: Cattle consume grasses and undergrowth that would otherwise pile up as fuel. One California study, showed that cattle removed nearly 600 pounds of fuel per acre. This directly reduces the potential size and severity of wildfires.

- Unused land is put to work: Grazing is the primary use of about 29% of all U.S. land, much of which is too rocky, dry, or steep to grow crops. Managed grazing improves not just the productivity, but the health of that land.

- Increased biodiversity: Properly managed grazing limits invasive species, attracts beneficial insects and grassland birds, and increases habitat diversity for wildlife. In many cases, ranches are a haven for endangered or recovering species.

- Nutrients are recycled back into the soil. As cattle graze, they fertilize the ground with manure and break up hard-packed soil with their unique, two-toed hooves. This feeds soil life and helps plants and native species thrive.

- Grazing is a natural pattern, thousands of years old. Grazing animals have shaped grassland ecosystems for millennia. Managed grazing replicates that same rhythm, restoring and maintaining the land, not depleting it.

Cattle aren't just using the land and moving on. Well-managed grazing practices help increase the health of rangeland and have been doing so for generations.

We’re headed to Horton Feedlot today to meet Feed Department Manager, Austin McKenzie, who has been part of the team at Horton since August 2013.

His passion for the beef industry started long before his time at Five Rivers. Growing up in Northern California, he worked alongside family and friends on cow/calf operations. Since joining the team at Horton, he has had the opportunity to learn the more technical side of cattle feeding and put that knowledge to work producing the best product possible alongside a great group of people.

When he’s not at the feedyard, you’ll still find him outside. He enjoys spending his days off with family and doing just about anything outdoors, from golfing to hunting.

Everyone at Five Rivers would like to extend huge congratulations and safe travels to Nora Grace Tuttle!

Nora was selected from more than 2,700 applicants to be part of the annual National Down Syndrome Society Times Square video presentation on Saturday, September 12th, in New York City.

Nora's father, Tres, is the general manager at Interstate Feeders in Malta, Idaho, and we have watched her grow up as a part of our .

“People with Down syndrome are more alike than different... she is perfect, and we’re just so proud of her,” Nora's mother, Liz Tuttle said.

Many people assume that the larger the operation, the rougher cattle are handled. However, cattle handling has changed dramatically over the last few decades.

By implementing facility design updates, regular training, and science-based data, we can not only handle cattle in a low-stress manner but also improve profitability along the way.

1. Equipment today is even designed to help reduce stress. Hydraulic chutes safely restrain cattle for common procedures. The gentle squeeze pressure can release oxytocin, helping calm the animal.

2. Employees are trained and certified in low-stress handling methods.

3. BQA has become a nationwide program using science-backed methods for animal handling, record-keeping, transportation, and general health.

4. Bigger doesn't mean worse. Well-run, large-scale operations often have more resources to invest in training, equipment, and improvements than people assume.

5. Animal wellbeing is directly tied to profitability, making proper handling not just something done for appearances, but something that makes good business sense too.

When cattle are calm, they're healthier, and when they're healthier, everyone wins: the animal, the producer, and the beef on your plate.
