Personal message from Alex:
There is something incredibly solemn about leaving a market where many vendors lost everything to a storm. I am grateful that we didn’t lose any product today but I also witnessed a woman diving to the ground to avoid being hit by her canopy as it was blowing away.
The reality is that all of the vendors at the market today spent hours upon hours creating products, then invested the time to commute and set up today just to pack up and head home (some of whom lost everything) without ever getting the chance to sell a single thing all because the forecast shifted rapidly. I personally spent 5 hours to attend today’s market which is more than half of a traditional work day and made 0$ per hour.
I share this because as fun as going to markets is for vendors and customers, they come with incredible risk for the vendors. We can think of vendor events as marketing opportunities but that logic only works if those we meet in person eventually become repeat customers via online platforms.
Luckily there is something you can do to help small businesses everywhere. If you know of any small business that you love and they have a means for you to order products online, please do! Yes it’s fun to see your favorites out at a market but for every one time you see us in the wild, we’ve taken the risk of attending a market 10x. We all know how to order things online. We’ve collectively built online platforms like Amazon and Etsy with our own wallets! Please find the website of the small businesses you truly love and order from them directly. You have no idea how much it will help them. Trust me.
If you have a small business, feel free to link to your page or website in the comments so we can support each other.
