Maplehawk Exhibition Poultry Maplehawk Exhibition Poultry was started in the spring of 2014 with poultry 4-H projects for our 3 children. We are NPIP and breed towards the SOP.

We are located in central Ohio close to Columbus, Oh. Any poultry breeding we do we strive to work towards the APA/ABA Standard for the breed. We show poultry as a family endeavor and instill good sportsmanship and friendly competition into our children. The breeds we currently have are-

Once again I am WAY behind on show results!

We attended the Preble County Poultry Club Spring Show 5-30.

Highly recommend this show and they are working on a fall show too!! Big isles, no double stack, excellent lighting in the barn, excellent people running it and my birds showed off!

Throughout the years Dan Castle (he judged white card/APA Semi)
has judged our children's birds numerous times, but I have never had the privilege of him judging any of mine. We have a huge respect for him, and he has mentored Jenna throughout her youth years with her Brahmas. Dan took a moment to share his judging of the Silkie classes, and how he goes about it. I have shown many other species of livestock and most of what I have shown you get reasons given out loud on a mic to the competitors and audience. You don't get that in exhibition poultry so this was a special treat!!! Poultry judges welcome questions after they are finished with the class normally. One thing he said that I took as a HUGE chunk of how I will build my White Silkie program -
He said when he starts a class, he goes into "cull mode". Weeding out the birds who's breeders didn't do their homework! Things like light colored eyes, poor wings for example.
That is a bit of info that I will take with me from now on!! I was honored to have my White pullet make Reserve Featherleg! A Black Cochin was Champion.

Something to be proud of....
Finally did it!! 🙌 I am officially a Master Breeder with the ABA for Bearded Black Silkies. 🖤
I want to thank the breeders before me, that I got stock from to create what I have today.
I remember my very first win- it was a Reserve Featherleg with one of my favorite birds- "Queen Ann".
If you go through my list of starred wins on the ABA website, a lot are reserves!!! Where I mainly show here in Ohio I am up against some of the absolute best Bantam Cochin breeders such as M & M Exhibition Poultry and Matt Mccammon.
A lot of those reserves are behind those breeders!!! We have tough Featherleg competition around here!! I am thankful the ABA awards points for reserve wins (of course noting there's enough numbers of birds) as when I showed Dairy Goats a reserve win was usually a ribbon and no leg towards finishing your doe.

I am still showing my Blacks and now working hard on Bearded White Silkies.
Been working on them for around 4 yrs now, after breeding them several years ago, but sold out except for one hen. That hen set a spark, and here we are!

Attended the Kentuckiana show this past weekend, first time at this show.
Had a fun day!! Normally we drive to a show that's 3 or more hours the day before. Things are really busy here this month, so it was drive down the morning of. We both will agree - that 💩 is exhausting!! We're too old for that!!
Despite that, it was an enjoyable show and the weather was good! The Featherleg class was the biggest. It was exciting to watch Tim Clanton judge the Silkies. He takes his time and really went over several birds a few times to decide which he felt had what it takes!

I am finally healed up (for the most part) from the worst sore throat I have had in years!! All the tests were negative so it is caused by some virus from hell! Anyway, feeling well enough- tomorrow at OMG o'clock we'll be heading to the Kentuckiana show with my show birds and all these fluffy gals and gents along with several pair of Black OE to find new coops. Some of the Silkies and OE are spoken for. After we get cooped in, show birds prepped and sales area set up, come on over and get you some! I don't want to take anything home! 😊

My most recent hatch. I don't know how many are in there, but it is one of the biggest hatches I've done. I normally hatch 20 or so at a time. I really wanted to get the D'Anvers out, and there's a bunch! Thanks to Tom and Jenna for loaning me an incubator to hatch in.
I set another big batch, so we'll see how it goes. Then - Silkies all the time. 🤣
