Hatching tip: if you are ever hatching multiple similar looking chicks and want ti keep track of who’s who, unraveled loofahs from the store make great little hatching pouches. Then you just mark them with dye or do your toe punch!

Culling is an integrated part of keeping and breeding livestock. I don’t understand the vitriol that’s often directed towards women who engage in the practice.

Livestock are a human tradition and that tradition takes effort, skill, and time. I appreciate all the humans that have come before me and contributed to that tradition and and grateful for my fellow keepers engaging in responsible culling and helping to pass that tradition foward.

How do you get Ermine Ameraucanas? Ermine is a feather pattern that occurs when you cross an Extended Black bird with a Dominant White bird. Both alleles are dominant so they essentially produce splotches of white and black as they duke it out! The ermine color variety is not officially accepted as of yet in the Ameraucana breed standard and is still considered a project variety. They still look stunning 😍

How we part out roosters! We always let the meat age for 2-4 days in the fridge to allow rigor mortis to pass. We separate the legs, thighs, and wings then grind the rest of the carcass meat. If you want the absolute hands down easiest way to use any age or s*x of chicken, just grind it! It cooks like any other ground meat in minutes and makes killer nachos!

Ever wonder about blue egg genetics 🤓?

The blue egg gene comes from a very old mutation in the chicken genome originally caused by a retrovirus. The virus recoded the chickens DNA to deposit biliverdin onto the eggshell 🤯.

The blue egg gene is called the Oocyan gene or O, pronounced oh-oh-SIGH-an. 🥚

It’s an Autosomally dominant gene, meaning it’s not s*xlinked, and it will be dominant over no expression when heterozygous.

A chicken can carry 1, 2, or no copies of the O allele. 🧬

With 1 inherited copy it is called heterozygous. Since O is dominant it will express when heterozygous, all hens will lay blue/green eggs. 🪺

Hens that are homozygous inherit both copies of O and lay the greenest/bluest eggs! 🐔

My Australorps love to go broody, so much that this 6 month pullet that maybe laid a total of 10 eggs decided it’s already time to be a teen mom. I gave her 5 eggs.. she somehow now has 11. I candled and they are all developing too 🤦‍♂️
