Māulukua By early 2000 the pastures were covered with invasive weeds. Hālau Ke’alaokamaile honored the land with the new name of Māulukua or ‘Upland Forest’.

After a long run of goats, the pastures are clear again setting the stage for a return to Wao La’au.

I’ve been cutting up fallen koa from the recent storms. The larger piece comes from a huge branch on an 11 year old koa. The smaller is one of its sub branches. The darker wood in the center is the maturing hardwood. The variation in core coloring is because it’s so young. Still forming. It’s just a spot in the smaller branch. Koa is akamai as it grows quickly to get established, then fills in as hardwood over the next 80 years. By then, larger pieces are solid dark hardwood with a thin white band on the outer edge.

A brand new ‘iliahi hua plus clusters and a net to catch them all! Birds are nibbling on the ripe ones. This particular tree is a mother tree. Very prolific with pua and hua. Signs of harmony & balance in ‘āina.

All the Maile plants were untouched🥳. This 16 year koa took a direct hit but managed to keep most of the plants under her safe. She lost some major branches and is leaning over but I’m encouraged and remain hopeful she’ll continue her journey up here.

This particular ūlei plant has been cranking since day 1. And today, pua! More buds too. Nice to see ‘Āina in motion.

This storm was the first to do some damage to our 16 year old koa trees. I’m looking forward to cleaning up and leaving the one tree leaning over to remember Lala. 3 years and 1 week after Lele. They are resilient. We’ll start to add more trees along the facing edge of these blasting storm winds.
