Folks. The luffahs are here, and they mean business.

This winter we are gonna be scrubbing everything. Our hands. Our dishes. Our floors. Our other dishes. Does it need to get scrubbed? There's a luffah for that. There's probably six luffahs for that right now, and more are growing. They won't stop growing.

Am I mad? No.
I'm terrified πŸ˜‚

I'll see you all in December with cleaned and dried luffah sponges ready to work, if they don't take over the property and evict us from the house before then 🀣

We made it! Happy Friday everyone!

I'll have a few homegrown lavender bundles with me this week at the Portland Farmers and Artisans Market πŸͺ»

This is Sensational, a French lavender variety, and has been harvested from our little lavender garden and dried indoors over the last few weeks.

Each lavender bundle comes with a reusable satchel - cut or strip the lavender buds from the stems and put them into the satchel for a natural closet or drawer freshener. The smell is incredible, but I can promise you the taste is not ☠️ French lavender is not suitable for culinary use because it's so potent, so please put it in the bag and not your mouth 🀣

Nothing to see here, just a little neighborly dispute between some food-motivated sheep and some violence-motivated geese 🀬🀣

This sweet boy made his way back to his momma a couple of weeks ago πŸ’› keeping the beautiful memories with us as a tangible reminder that our friends are never far 🐾

Grateful to spend a few minutes amongst the bees this morning 🐝

Some of the luffahs we transplanted into the new luffah garden seem to be lagging a bit, which isn't surprising given the stress of the move and the heat wave that ensued immediately after we transferred them. They may not all make useable luffah gourds before winter, but at least they can provide sustenance for the bees which is arguably more important anyway πŸ’›

"What greater gift than the love of a cat." - Charles Dickens

Annie knew much love with her family, and graced them with hers in return. She was and will always be a dignified and poised girl, taking the challenges of life in stride and never letting them dampen her spirit. One of her roles included big sister to the daring miss Coconut, a former BCR feral who was fortunate enough to become a member of Annie's family.

It's not goodbye, it's just see you later. πŸ’œ

This year has not been a great year for hatching chicks 😭 out of all of the eggs I have incubated, I currently have 8 babies to show for the effort. My girls contributed 3 more babies that they incubated and hatched themselves. I'm not sure if it's been the weather, shipping conditions, or maybe I just haven't been wearing the right colored shirt and standing on my left foot while juggling tennis balls for long enough to have good luck this year...

I love all of the littles I have been able to hatch this year, and currently they're all staying. I won't have any birds available for the foreseeable future while I navigate rebuilding some pens and deciding what my plan is for showing. I may have some again in 2027 once I've had more time to grow these babies out and define a path forward with my flock.

Most importantly, meet "Maple," a cute little mottled babe who hatched from eggs from Silkies on the Shore the day I returned from my work trip to Canada 🍁
