The fiber has been unloaded. This is the first year I weighed everyone before and after shearing. If my scale is accurate, we have a total of 92 pounds in fiber from 12 alpacas. 🦙

That's a wrap on shearing 2026. (More videos to come)

Our prep starts with about a 3 day barn deep clean. We shear inside so the barn needs to be pristine and it gives me a chance to start cleaning off animals. Next step is closing them into smaller pasture areas with shorter grass to limit the amount of foliage they collect on their fiber. Then about 3-4 days before shearing everyone gets locked inside where I try to blow them off as much as possible. This year I experimented with using the dog hair dryer and it worked really well. Finally once shearing day arrives we do last minute animal cleans, halter everyone up, and start the shearing process. Afterwards the animals look skinny and get to frolic outside while the humans enjoy a little picnic.

Shearing day is always a ton of work but it's also a fun day. Huge thank you to our shearers and our helpers.

Barn is officially clean and scrubbed. Everyone is in their summer areas. The boys get the lean to pasture. Gertie and KB get the smaller stall side while weaning happens. The rest of the girls get the bigger stall side and full pasture access. Once weaning is done all the girls will get to be back together again. 🦙

Spring barn clean out. Almost done and ready for shearing in a few weeks. I need 2 warmer sunny days so I can spray/bleach the floors. The alpacas love the cool stall mats.

Busy week on the farm. With all the rain the weeds and grass have been growing fast. Renn helped me pull weeds along the fence line in the pasture. She was a good supervisor. The chicks kept escaping their kiddie pool so they got upgraded to a large animal water trough. The pasture is too wet to brush hog right now but it's on the to do list. Next up on the to do list is a deep clean of the barn. If only the weather would cooperate. 🐣

The family has expanded. Today we welcomed our 8 new feathered friends to the homestead. Hopefully all will be hens and lay lots of eggs when they get bigger. The chicken count is now up to 33.

We had a few rainy days this week which meant we made some more sourdough. This week's flavor: lemon blueberry.

Happy Easter! We have some Easter bunnies in training. They have a little more work to do, but they're cute.

Sourdough starter strikes again. Lots of starter means time to bake. Last time we did a bunch of different protein bagels including blueberry, strawberry blueberry, asiago, bacon gouda, peanut butter chocolate, and strawberry chocolate. All were delicious. We've done white, wheat, and almond loaves in the past. This time its going to be strawberry cinnamon rolls, a white loaf, pepperjack cheese bread, and maybe an almond loaf.
