How do you spend your Friday nights? I am partying 🎉 it up here doing f***l egg counts 💩 on my sheep!

F***l egg counts are an important tool I use in my parasite 🪱 management for my sheep. It allows me to make treatment decisions based on the amount and types of eggs seen in the microscope 🔬 as opposed to just guessing. I can also perform f***l egg count reduction tests that can tell me the efficacy of dewormers used. This let's me know if the worms are becoming resistant to the dewormers.

Along with making treatment decisions, f***l egg counts can also tell me which sheep are harboring the greatest number of parasites and are asymptomatic and therefore may be parasite ✨️resilient✨️, as well as which sheep are harboring the lowest number of parasites and therefore may be parasite ✨️resistant✨️. This data will the be taken into account when making breeding decisions.

Moving the girls to a fresh paddock! The girls are moved to a fresh paddock every 1-2 days. This allows us to rest our pastures properly for ultimate regrowth and pasture health as well as breaking the parasite cycle for the health of our sheep.

What Does Micron Count Mean?

A micron (μm) is a unit used to measure the diameter of a wool fiber. One micron is one-millionth of a meter.

Think of it this way: micron count tells us how fine or coarse a wool fiber is.
🐑 Lower micron number = finer fiber
Often feels softer against the skin
🐑 Higher micron number = coarser fiber
Often more durable and resilient

For example:
Fine Merino wool may be around 17–22 mocrons.
Many medium wools fall in the 23–30 micron range.
Some longwool and carpet breeds can be much coarser.

But micron isn't the whole story.
Softness is also influenced by crimp, staple structure, fiber length, and breed characteristics. Two fleeces with the same micron count can feel surprisingly different in your hands.

When fiber producers talk about micron count, they're using one tool to describe a fleece—but the real magic happens when all of a wool's characteristics come together.

What makes wool one of nature's most sustainable fibers? 🐑🌱

Wool is a truly renewable resource. Each year, sheep grow a new fleece that can be harvested through shearing, allowing the fiber to be collected without harming the animal. Then the cycle begins again as the sheep grow another fleece the following year.

Unlike synthetic fibers made from petroleum, wool is 100% natural and biodegradable. When wool reaches the end of its useful life, it naturally breaks down in the environment, returning valuable nutrients to the soil instead of persisting as microplastic pollution.

Wool is also remarkably durable. A well-made wool garment, blanket, or skein of yarn can last for decades with proper care, reducing the need for frequent replacement and helping to minimize waste. These are heirloom pieces.

At our farm, we like to say that our sheep turn sunshine, grass, and water into beautiful fiber. Every fleece is a renewable harvest from nature that can be transformed into yarn, clothing, and textiles that connect us to the land. 🌳
