Eric performing an annual disconnect PM at this grain elevator got us thinking. 🤔 So we're curious: what's the ONE maintenance item at your facility that gets done every year, no matter what?

Electrical equipment. Bearings. Belts. Motors. Conveyors. Legs. Dryers. Controls. There's always something that could use attention, and there's never unlimited time to get to all of it.

We don't need to know the most expensive or the biggest. What's the one experience has taught you not to skip?

Not your average day of training. 😳 Awhile back our North Dakota and Minnesota millwright team completed a 32-hour High Angle Rope Access Training class with a S.A.T.R.A. instructor.

Why does a millwright need rope access training?

Think about inspecting a tall grain handling structure. Something as small as a missing bolt can be hundreds of feet in the air in an area that isn't easily accessible from a platform or ladder.

Rope access training gives our team another way to safely reach and inspect those difficult areas of a structure.

You don't always need a full bin replacement. We can provide a wide variety of bin repairs that return them back to full operating condition.

Take this bin for example. We jacked it up, removed this ring of bad panels, and replaced them with brand new ones.

Projects like this are also a good reminder heading toward harvest: maintenance doesn't always mean replacing an entire system. Addressing individual problem areas before they're asked to perform through another busy season can go a long way.

You drive over it thousands of times. But how often do you look underneath? Long before trucks start dumping grain, a project like this has to be properly planned.

Excavation depth and footprint, soil and groundwater conditions, the concrete structure, pit size, conveying equipment and future access all have to be considered before the finished surface ever sees its first truck.

Those decisions become considerably harder and much more expensive to change once thousands of pounds of steel and concrete are in the ground.

That's why a good receiving project isn't just about how many bushels per hour you want to move. It's about talking with a team that understands your needs and can design a system to match.

Alright operators, we need to know. 🤔 Every grain operation has one area that gets blamed first when things slow down. If you could only improve ONE area before harvest, which one would you pick?

For some, it is receiving. Trucks stack up, the pit cannot keep up, and the line starts backing into the field.

For others, it is drying. The bushels are coming in, but the dryer becomes the part everyone is watching.

Sometimes it is electrical, controls, or automation that should have been updated before the system was under pressure.

Most operations know the area that creates the most stress when bushels start moving. So, what are you improving?

Storms can have a massive impact. But they don't have to! We have shared several storm damage posts recently because, unfortunately, this is the reality for a lot of operations during storm season.

Bins damaged.
Roofs torn up.
Structures twisted.
Operations interrupted.

"It's made in America!" A phrase you hear tossed around a lot these days. But it MEANS a lot. We are proud to fabricate our products right here in the USA. But it is not something we say lightly. It matters to our customers.

It matters when a drag conveyor needs new chain quickly.
It matters when your project needs a custom component instead of a standard part pulled from a shelf.
It matters when you need to talk to a real person who understands how the system is built and how it is supposed to run.

We can fabricate.
We can weld.
We can repair.
We can build for the operation in front of us.

Electrical panels like these help support the systems that move grain, feed, and other materials. For our customers, this matters because the system has to function with little to no downtime. It HAS to operate, in reliable way, when the operation is under pressure.

When you are checking legs, conveyors, dryers, pits, unloads, bearings, belts, and other mechanical components, do not skip your electrical components.

If your electrical system has not been looked over recently, let’s get it on the schedule before the busy season finds the weak spot.

A lot of grain systems look great from the ground. But the real question is what happens when someone has to get up there.

Catwalks are not just there for looks, and they are not just part of the structure. They give people the access they need to do real work around conveyors, transitions, bearings, drives, spouting, gates, sensors, and other areas that may need attention over time.

Our crew replaced this catwalk for a customer, and it is a good reminder that access should always be part of the conversation. Because when a system needs inspected, serviced, cleaned, adjusted, or repaired, the route can either make the job safer and more efficient… or turn a simple issue into a bigger challenge.

Does your operation have a head section? You probably want to hear this. Because not all grain head sections are created equally. There are three major areas to consider.

1. Flow Rate - Grain has to come over the top and discharge cleanly into the rest of the system. Poor transitions, restrictions, or rough flow points can affect how efficiently the system performs.

2. Wear Prevention - This part of the leg works hard. Grain movement, fines, dust, and season-after-season use all add up, so wear-resistant internal components matter.

3. Serviceability - Eventually, you'll need to inspect, adjust, repair, or replace parts. Access and design details can make that work easier or much more difficult.

These head sections arrived on site and were hoisted into position, but the real story is what they are built to do after the crane leaves.
