Three trucks headed to South Dakota. And that's just to get the job started. 💪 Our crews are on the move, delivering materials and bringing a crane to our South Dakota jobsite for an upcoming installation.

A grain dryer RATED for 1,000 BPH might not dry 1,000 bushels every hour. Why? Several things can affect how much grain a dryer actually processes.

1. Incoming moisture. Drying corn from 20% to 15% is a different job than drying it from 25% to 15%. More moisture to remove generally means lower throughput.

2. Weather conditions. Outside temperature and humidity can affect drying performance. The same dryer won't necessarily perform identically under different conditions.

3. Airflow and grain condition. Fines, debris, and restricted airflow can reduce drying efficiency and affect capacity.

4. Operating settings. Drying temperature, cooling configuration, and the target discharge moisture all influence how much grain can move through the dryer.

That's why the BPH number on a specification sheet needs context.

If you're considering a new dryer or trying to increase drying capacity for next season, make sure you're comparing equipment based on the conditions your operation actually faces.

“Wait... you guys can actually MAKE that?” We hear that more than you might think.

A lot of the steel you see going into our grain projects doesn't arrive at CAS ready to install. Our fabrication teams in Napoleon and Upper Sandusky are cutting, bending, welding and building components for the systems our crews install across the Midwest.

Receiving pits. Hoppers. Spouting and transitions. Conveyor components. And plenty of custom pieces that don't come neatly out of a catalog.

But here's WHY we do it.

We don't fabricate just so we can say we make things in America. We do it because it helps us take better care of our customers. Especially when a project or repair needs something specific quickly.

Sometimes everything looks perfect on paper… until the bushels really start moving. Maybe the pit couldn't take grain as quickly as the trucks could bring it. Maybe the dryer became a limiting factor.

Another project is taking shape in North Dakota. 💪 Cody's crew is in Litchville this week working around a new Brock Grain Systems, a Division of CTB, Inc. bin, and this grain pump is next up. It's getting rigged, while Mike waits on the crane until they're ready to send it up.

This is the kind of work we want MORE of. New bins. Grain handling upgrades. Dryers. Larger expansions. Complete new systems.

A 15,000 BPH grain leg doesn't automatically give you a 15,000 BPH grain system. That number only tells you what ONE piece of the system is designed to handle. Your actual flow depends on everything that has to keep up with it.

The receiving pit.
The conveyor feeding the leg.
The leg itself.
The distributor and spouting after it.
The equipment carrying grain to its final destination.

If one part of that path can't keep pace, adding more capacity somewhere else doesn't make the bottleneck disappear.

Alright operators, let's talk grain pumps VS augers. This project from Matt and our Beloit crew has THREE of them.

If you're planning a new grain system, don't make the decision based only on what you've always used. Check out the info below to help you make a more informed decision.

Augers:
🔹 Simple way to move grain from Point A to Point B.
🔹 Application doesn't justify the complexity of a chain conveyor.
🔹 Initial cost is an important part of the decision.

Grain pumps:
🔹 Gentler grain handling is a priority.
🔹 You're looking for lower horsepower per bushel.
🔹 The layout benefits from enclosed chain-and-paddle conveyor.

There are tradeoffs.

Grain pumps have chains, paddles and additional components to maintain. Augers are mechanically simpler, but the screw action can be harder on grain, especially when they're operated improperly or aren't kept full.

That's why there isn't always one winner. The decision should depend on your specific operational needs. If you need help making the decision, we're happy to help.

This isn't the kind of rust you just ignore. 😮 You're looking at an old grain bin stiffener. One of many that had significant corrosion and deterioration.

Stiffeners aren't there for looks. They're structural components designed to help carry loads through the bin wall. When you're inspecting a bin, take a closer look at them. Look for:

Heavy corrosion or visible loss of steel
Bent or buckled sections
Loose, missing or badly corroded bolts
Deterioration around connections
Areas where water and debris may be contributing to corrosion

This customer ultimately needed 30 replacement stiffeners.

It's a good reminder that some of the most important things to inspect on a grain system aren't the components that move.
