I was really sad this week to hear that another soap vendor at an event was upset that we were there, made comments about there being more than one goat milk soap vendor, and was even rude to a shopper because they already had a Misfits Farm bag in their hand.
And I want to say this first: I get it.
Vendor life is HARD. You spend all week making products, labeling, packing, loading trailers, setting up displays, and then give up your entire weekend hoping for a successful event. When you get there and see several vendors selling something similar to what you make, it can absolutely be frustrating.
But I also believe there is room for all of us. ❤️
We may both make goat milk soap, but that doesn’t mean we’re making the same thing. Every maker brings their own recipes, ingredients, scents, style, story, and personality to their products. Customers are allowed to love more than one of us!
Misfits Farm just marked the beginning of our third year, and over these last two full years, something pretty amazing has happened:
I’ve become FRIENDS with other goat milk soap makers.
We’ve bounced business ideas off each other. We’ve talked about what customers are loving, what hasn’t worked, which events are worth doing, recipes, packaging, goats, farming, and all the crazy things that come with running a small business.
I’ve learned from them, and I hope somewhere along the way they’ve learned something from me too.
That’s the kind of small-business community I want to be part of.
I have put an incredible amount of time, energy, thought, and love into the products we bring you. We source everything we possibly can from our own farm and from other local farmers and small businesses. I’m incredibly proud of what Misfits Farm has become, and I have some pretty big dreams for where we’re going.
But someone else’s success doesn’t take away from mine.
So, to the other soap makers, farmers, makers, and small-business owners I meet along the way:
Come talk to me!
Let’s talk business. Let’s talk goats. Let’s talk farming. Let’s talk about the event we’re standing at, what has worked for you, what hasn’t, or just life in general.
Girl, I don’t care if you’re selling goat milk soap three booths down from me — I’m in your corner.
I want your little business to become everything you’ve dreamed it could be, just like I’m working every day to make my own dreams for Misfits Farm happen.
And if you’re someone who isn’t in business yet but wants to learn how to make soap, raise goats, farm, or just wants to know how we do what we do — come talk to me too.
One of my biggest dreams is to eventually open our farm to the public so we can create even more of those relationships, teach, share what we’ve learned, and build a community around this crazy little farm of ours.
There is enough room at my table.
I’d much rather pull up another chair than try to push someone else’s away. ❤️🐐
Because at the end of the day, another small business succeeding doesn’t mean yours is failing.
Support each other. Learn from each other. Cheer each other on.
Community over competition. Always. ❤️
