the resource altar is a year long ancestral somatics journey through seven gates of somatic practice, plant medicine, ritual, and the living resource altar.

this is a space to generate safety from the inside out. to understand your nervous system through an earth based lens. and to cultivate facilitation skills and frameworks to lead embodied, earth based, liberatory spaces.

to build a living resource altar in your body, your home, and your community that you can return to for the rest of your life.

most months we meet live twice, a friday morning and a saturday afternoon, with time between to practice, integrate, and let the work move through you. over the next few weeks we’ll walk you through each gate.

get to know the suit of sou sou in our new living Black archive oracle + tarot deck! the 56 cards emerge from the land and the practices that shape SUSU.

4 suits, time, sou sou, land, and homeplace, move from ace through ten and four ancestral face cards, bringing together divination, the living Black archive, plant and land knowledge, collective care, ancestral wisdom, and the teachings of Black women and knowledge keepers.

sou sou = pentacles
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
this suit draws from the Black diasporic practice of rotational saving alongside SUSU’s larger practice of reciprocity. sou sou is practiced in many places and helps redistribute resources already among us and opens up portals of possibility when they move. sou sou expands wealth beyond money to include food, medicine, knowledge, labor, care, relationship, pleasure, ritual, and collective capacity. the journey of this suit is about thriving in this material realm based on what we have, what we need, what we can contribute, what must circulate, and how abundance grows when resources are kept in relationship. its ancestral face cards offer teachings in stewardship, healing, exchange, and the many forms wealth can take.

the time suit gives space for mental practice to loosen the straight line between past, present, and future. it offers examples of ways to do this through Black and Indigenous thinking on embodied, ancestral, sonic, ecological, cyclical, geological, dream, embodied, and fugitive time. the suit explores how memory travels, how history remains present, and how different ways of keeping time make different futures possible. its ancestral face cards bring us into relationship with Black women whose work teaches us how to remember, imagine, survive, and move through time otherwise.

liberation needs tending, just like a garden or a farm or forest. we find ourselves returning again and again, and it teaches us patience. against the odds, we find ways to cultivate our place in the world. we grow food in small plots, and we share harvests with each other. we learn how to survive from our elders. we carry seeds across migrations. we imagine futures that can nourish generations we may never meet. every seed carries memory, and every harvest remembers the hands that came before.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fannie Lou Hamer believed political freedom and food sovereignty belonged together. she knew that a ballot could change laws, but she also knew people needed to eat and play and belong.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
at SUSU, we carry this knowledge into our retreats, shared meals, medicinal herbs, sound baths, and gatherings in the fields. each practice is a way of cultivating our living Black archive and sanctuary - both on the land and in our bodies.

new mini teach-in, based on a lecture that deserves more ears, which we found while researching deeper into our histories of sou sou (or susu or su-su).

we talk about sou sou as a monetary practice where people gather what they have, one person receives, and the resources continue to move through the circle.

but writer Olive Senior gives us another meaning from her Jamaican heritage. “su-su” or “sus” is also the sound of something moving from ear to ear in her 2005 lecture “The Poem as Gardening, the Story as Su-Su: Finding a Literary Voice.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Senior writes about growing up in Jamaica when “the heroes of books were not people like us.” the oral tradition had to carry histories that were missing from the written record. story, song, ritual, music, dance, gossip, and everyday conversation became ways of knowing and remembering - “that other language of our inheritance.” histories that have been left out of books need us to tell them, hear them, and keep them in circulation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
the word “gossip” meant someone who was connected to you like family, someone with a “vested interest” in what happened to you. information passed between people who were responsible to one another. the teller and listener were both connected to what was being told.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
this is where su-su becomes a practice of finding and using our voices. for Senior, “home” is a place where you speak and someone answers, where you speak to community “and it speaks back to you.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
we practice su-su when we make room for each other’s voices and take seriously what we hear. practice this in reflection:

what do you know because someone told you? what histories have been entrusted to you? what have you learned that someone else might need? and who speaks back when you use your voice?

happy solar return to our beloved ancestor bell hooks 🎂

at susu we constructed a healing retreat space called homeplace inspired by bell hooks essay of homeplace

here our people gather and construct the conditions of our material safety, dignity, belonging, warmth, and love alongside one another

we are so grateful for all the medicine bell hooks has left for us

in honor of her our last sound bath this year this saturday will take place in our very own cozy homeplace 🥰
