Black BBQ History. My mother, who was part of the Great Migration, was born in rural Alabama. Mom arrived in Oakland, California looking for a better life. She arrived at the 16th Street train station in West Oakland on July 26, 1952, with her three young daughters Virginia, Annie, and Dorothy Jr. Her husband Cleveland Everett had sent for her after finding a job and a place to live in Oakland.

Before the construction of the Nimitz Freeway (880) in the late 1950’s, we lived at 517 Brush Street in West Oakland. After mom and dad divorced, Dad joined his older brother Clarkie Everett in Albany, New York, but mom stayed in Oakland. Mom, now a single parent, had a dream... Everett and Jones Barbeque
