It will be nice when this heat wave breaks. We have had a couple of cooler nights for which I am thankful. The heat makes it hard on the laying hens as well as the cows. These girls have found a shady spot under the pines. There is usually a slight breeze blowing there. Animals are so smart if left to their own instinct.

I saw this on the label of some “pasture raised” eggs. It made me laugh a bit. Yes, it is marketing, but, how can pasture raised chickens be vegetable fed? I have never seen a chicken that will choose grass over bugs. Chickens are naturally bug eaters, if they are in a pasture the only way to keep them vegetarian would be to use very strong pesticide. Are there really people who believe chickens are vegetarian?

This huge wasp has been in the high tunnel for a few days. I finally caught it sitting still and got this picture. Eastern Cicada killer, males do not sting according to the information I found. I will not get close enough to find out. This guy makes a very loud buzz when he flies and the size is scary!! That is a healthy tomato leaf he is sitting on. Probably 2 1/2 -3 inches long.

When you love, you hurt. We had to say goodbye to our “baby”, Bourbon the standard poodle. He had a very invasive, fast moving cancer. We miss him greatly, but there are other animals to care for, gardens to water and things to do. So with heavy hearts we continue on.
