Are 130 million fine French baguettes reason enough to add worms to your garden?

France has been hit hard by heat and drought over the last two summers. Most of their farms are not irrigated and crop loss has been significant. Their Department of Agriculture has been strongly pushing sustainable agriculture - and now have results from farms that made the change.

In a study of more than 1,200 farms across France, early findings show that highly regenerative farms recorded an eight per cent drop in crop yields compared with 22 per cent on their least regenerative counterparts following the 2023 droughts. They determined that if the most regenerative practices studied were adopted across France, it would protect the equivalent of 17 weeks of wheat supply for a typical industrial flour mill during a similar future drought – enough wheat to produce approximately 130 million baguettes.

Keys: cover crops and mulch, microbially rich soils, crop diversity, and worms! They reported "soils managed with regenerative practices held between eight and 15 per cent more water than conventionally tilled soils, and produced biomass yields 15 to 20 per cent higher for the same volume of water used"

I am so excited to announce that Angela from Growing in the Garden will be teaching for us this Saturday morning. When we spoke last week, she told me that her favorite thing to do was teach classes in person. We agreed (ok, I begged!) that she would try this weekend. This is a great class and Angela is a great teacher - and if her treatment gets in the way, our Arizona Worm Farm team will back her up.

No one fights alone. I have felt that so deeply these past few weeks.

I started treatment at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, and I’m grateful to be receiving daraxonrasib through a clinical trial as my first treatment. I’m thankful for my doctors and for the opportunity to try this new treatment.

A friend gave me a book to write down the good things that happen each day, the tender mercies. I’m amazed at how many there are. Your prayers, messages, and kindness have been overwhelming. Thank you. I feel them.

My husband, children, brother, friends, and family are helping me navigate this new normal. There have been plenty of tears, but also lots of together time and laughter.

One of my favorite moments was being in the garden with my grandson, with butterflies all around us. This is a good life.

We’re feeling things deeply over here. And right now, mostly I’m feeling grateful.
