We need your help!

Many youth in our neighborhood rely on free school breakfast and lunch during the school year. Free school food programs trace their history back to the Black Panther Party, who launched the first Free Breakfast for School Children program in 1969. This program was launched in direct response to a critical community need. That needs still exists in many communities across our nation today; our neighborhood of Garfield being one of them.

In the summer, there is in an increase in food insecurity because youth aren’t receiving those two meals each school day. How do we know this? During the school year, a packed food pantry will last a couple weeks before being depleted. In the summer, it often lasts just a few days.

As you purchase food or household essentials for yourself or your family or your friends this summer, please consider picking up one extra thing and dropping it off at our food pantry. Your donation is needed, appreciated, and directly contributes to the well-being of the neighborhood that we call home.

One of my favorite things on the farm is appreciating all the little friendships and neighborhoods between plants in the growing spaces. Especially the perennial herbs AJ incorporates in the herb labyrinth. Some plants are the excellent mutually beneficial annual “companions” that we plan to strategically and intentionally interplant to attract beneficial insects or repel pests, like marigolds and tomatoes, zukes or peppers. Or plants that are complimentary in their nutrient uptake, like legumes and nitrogen loving tomatoes, cukes and peppers. But some of the perennials growing around are just lovely neighbors, planted densely to fill out the space and to keep the w**d pressure in check. They may have some companion characteristics that I’m not familiar with! Let us know what you think/know! What herbs do you plant close together at home? While we’re harvesting I like to daydream about recipes that would incorporate the neighbors together, or the flavor of the honey the bees are making with the pollen combos💚

My (John Creasy) new book is coming out in less than a year. It's such a long process! Lots of stories connected to the farm and all I've learned from that land over the past two decades. Final week of Spring CSA harvest today, and some elderflowers for wholesale! Pak choi, DILL, garlic scapes, arugula, farm fresh eggs, gorgeous 💚 our first mobile market is next week, keep an eye out for more info!

*Workshop this Saturday*

Plant Timing, Spacing, and Companions Workshop
Saturday, June 6 from 1 - 230p at GCF (allotment garden and farm production spaces)

Learn when to plant your vegetables and herbs, how to space them, and what plants have positive relationships with each other (companion plants) to enhance plant production, reduce pests, and increase soil health. Attendees will receive a flower companion plant and seeds to take home. Plan on getting into the dirt during this workshop!

This is a FREE, family-friendly workshop. Registration isn’t required but encouraged.

This workshop is part of our Gardening Basics Workshop series and one of the ways we support the Garfield Grows Network (GGN), a free informal learning and support network for Garfield growers of all ages and experience levels. Many thanks to the SWPA United Way Community Food Solutions Grant and the City of Pittsburgh’s Food Justice Fund Grant for supporting this workshop and the Garfield Grows Network!

We are so excited for this one-of-kind community event!! GCF is teaming up with to bring you a mixer with a twist.

While the vibes and food alone (food by ) will be well worth your time, this event will feature the cashless marketplace created by InvolveMint. This unique marketplace runs on community credits as opposed to traditional currency. Individuals earn community credits through volunteering and then can spend these credits at participating vendors. So cool, right?

Attendees can also create an account at the event! Credits can be earned during the event through the following ways: picking up trash, bringing a book to donate to the Little Free Library, bringing a seed packet to donate to the Seed Sharing Library, pulling knotw**d, and/or dropping off compost.

*Vendors will also be accepting traditional currency in addition to community credits
