Send some healing thoughts Bullseye’s way!

Bullseye is our senior mule that came from Save the Brays Donkey Rescue several years ago. We aren’t sure of his exact age, but the vet thinks he is over 30 years old based on his teeth.

When we had the vet out for the horses’ and mules’ annual exams, we discovered that Bullseye was running a fever. The vet suspects anaplasmosis (a tick borne disease), so we are treating with IV antibiotics once a day.

Today was day 2, and I’m happy to report that Bullseye is feeling better! No fever and he is much more lively… Of course that also means he is giving my vet a run for his money 🤣 Mules can sometimes have little quirks and strong opinions… Bullseye has a strong aversion to needles and the vet in general…

So send some good thoughts to Dr. Matt too! We have 3 more days of antibiotics to go!

Got the smoker fired up and the blue hive got its second brood box put on this weekend! I have yet to find the queen, but she’s in there somewhere laying eggs!

I found the queen in the green hive on the third frame I pulled! It always feels like a good omen when I spot a queen 😊

*quick commercial break from posts about cows* 🤣

I finished planting my garden on my lunch break today! Tomatoes and peppers are officially in! Now I just need to clean out the sheep/goat dry lot so I can plant my pumpkin patch! 🎃

Note - I mulch with wool in the beds that have plants planted, and waste hay in the beds with seeds planted (the wool is too thick to let seedlings pop through). I’m hoping that this will help regulate soil temperature and moisture!

Some days I am just on fire. What can I say? 😎

I sorted 5 pregnant cows and heifers out from our steers and yearlings on my lunch break all by myself with nothing but a gate and this shepherd’s hook that I found in the barn. I just needed an extension of my arm to ward off inquisitive steers 🤣 AND it only took me ten minutes!

Now the rest of the cows can actually calve in the mama cow pen that we prepared for them like they’re supposed to!

I moved the mama cows and babies (and Adele) out to the calving pen on my lunch break!

We still have to move the pregnant cows and heifers out to this pen, but that’s a job for a few people so that we can sort out the yearlings that will be going to our rental farm for the summer.

In the meantime, these mamas and babies are settling in! ❤️

We started transitioning the horses to pasture this weekend!

Horses need to be introduced slowly to fresh pasture to avoid colic. Colic is essentially a bad stomach ache, which doesn’t sound that dire, but it can be deadly! When humans get a bad stomach ache we can just throw up, but horses are physically unable to throw up. If a horse colics, they can die.

Sound dramatic? Yeah, it is. 🤣 That’s why we try to avoid it!

The boys got 1 hour yesterday, 2 hours today, and tomorrow they will get 4 hours. Over the next few days I will continue to increase the number of hours they are on pasture to 8 hours, 12 hours, and finally a full 24 hours. They are very thankful for the fresh grass! 🤠

Now that our calf drama is over with, we need name suggestions!!!

If you’re new to our naming conventions, we are going through the alphabet for our heifer calf names, and the bull calves are given a realistic name such as “Burger, Brisket, Sirloin” etc.

We need a name for our bull calf (first picture) and a name that starts with “T” for our heifer calf (second picture). Drop a comment on this post or under each picture and I’ll announce their names by the end of the weekend! 🤩
