METER Group METER designs scientific instrumentation that delivers real-time, high-resolution environmental data. In 2016, two firms merged. Each was successful on its own.

Each had a unique focus. They were brought together by strong common values, similar roots, a history of collaboration, and shared expertise in science and engineering. The unified company combines the strengths of both firms to create powerful synergy, competitive advantage and new business opportunities. To know where you are going, you must know where you came from. Let’s take a moment to look back. FROM PULLMAN TO MARS

Decagon Devices, Inc. was founded in 1983 by Dr. Gaylon Campbell, a renowned soil scientist and faculty member at Washington State University. The first Decagon product was an instrument to measure water in soil. Decagon quickly realized that other customers could benefit from their expertise in measuring water. New markets like food safety, pharmaceuticals and other industries needed solutions to determine water content and water potential in their products. Over the next 30 years, Decagon improved and expanded their expertise in engineering sensors, all while maintaining affordable product offerings. Today, Decagon products are used all over the world and even beyond: in universities, research and testing laboratories, government agencies, vineyards, farms and industrial applications – even on Mars. GERMAN SCIENTIFIC ENGINEERING

UMS AG was founded in 1989 by Georg von Unold, a mechanical engineer who was working at the renowned Helmholtz Research Center in Munich, Germany. The first UMS product was a scientific instrument for soil irrigation control. The tensiometer sensor series was quickly adopted by scientists due to its precision and reliability. To date, more than 20,000 UMS tensiometers have been used in research projects worldwide. In 1991, the product range was extended to cover environment monitoring systems – from proprietary sensor technology and the development of innovative components to planning and providing individual customized solutions. OUR DNA

8,367,180 meters. That’s precisely the distance from the doorstep of the headquarter in Pullman to the entrance of the headquarter in Munich. The businesses seem a world apart. But if you take a closer look, you will see that the people in these two places have always been much closer:

Both companies were founded by individuals who are passionate about measuring the natural environment. Both founders were initially driven by their own needs, but quickly saw that they could create products for their colleagues. Both companies share a drive to invent rather than follow. Both companies are committed to marketing through educating our clients. In Pullman as well as Munich, we speak the language of scientic engineering. In both places, the corporate culture is built around the importance of employees. We build a strong foundation on common ground, and our differences are complementary. Pullman has expertise in measuring the dry end, Munich the wet end. While Pullman excels in science and simplicity, Munich does so in engineering and precision. For over a decade, we’ve worked together in product development, supply and distribution, customer support and education. That was enough time to detect a clear fit and to decide to take the next step.

Spot-checking surface soil conditions is most useful when measurements are fast, repeatable, and easy to compare across locations.

SOLYX Go uses CDX technology to measure soil moisture, temperature, bulk electrical conductivity, and pore water electrical conductivity with the push of a button. Each reading is paired with a timestamp and GPS coordinates through the connected mobile device, helping teams map conditions and compare measurements over time without manually managing spreadsheets.

How many infiltration measurements are enough to represent an entire rain garden?

Drs. Andrea Welker and Kristin Sample-Lord tested five rain gardens using several types of infiltrometers to compare spot measurements with whole-system ponding recession rates. In this webinar, they explain the impact of spatial variability on sampling decisions, what they learned about the number of measurements required, and the practical tradeoffs among different field methods.

Introducing SOLYX Go, the new push-and-read soil moisture sensor from METER.

Designed for fast surface-soil measurements, SOLYX Go uses CDX technology to measure volumetric water content, temperature, bulk electrical conductivity, and pore water electrical conductivity in seconds. Each reading is paired with a timestamp and GPS coordinates through a connected mobile device and stored in ZENTRA Cloud, making conditions easier to map, compare, and share across locations.

When you want to understand nutrient movement or salt buildup, pore water EC is the most accurate measurement to turn to. Using modern sensor technology, it’s now easier than ever to reliably measure this property, so you know whether soils are accumulating salts and if it’s time to flush them out.

Join our upcoming webinar, where product scientist and METER Director of Science Engagement Leo Rivera will discuss new methods for measuring pore water EC.

How closely do SATURO and double-ring infiltrometer measurements agree?

Both methods measure field-saturated hydraulic conductivity by infiltrating water from the soil surface, but they account for three-dimensional flow differently. In a seven-location comparison, the measurements generally agreed across many soil conditions. The largest differences appeared where large structural macropores dominated and installation of the double-ring system disturbed the soil structure.

Read the comparison to see how the methods handle lateral flow, water requirements, and field installation:

Measuring field saturated hydraulic conductivity does not have to mean a complicated setup or hours of post-processing.

The SATURO Dual Head Infiltrometer automates infiltration measurement and calculates field saturated hydraulic conductivity (Kfs) during the test. Install the ring, connect the hoses, and push start. The calculated Kfs value is available as soon as the test is complete, and the raw data can be downloaded for further analysis.

Dr. Tejinder Singh and his team at Utah State University are working with farmers in arid environments who need better irrigation strategies to limit runoff.

Using infiltration measurements and other soil data, they evaluate field conditions to suggest the soil amendments that will improve infiltration. They have also created a website that uses those measurements to estimate gypsum, elemental sulfur, and irrigation water requirements, connecting field data with practical next steps for growers.

Questions about soil moisture release curves and hydraulic conductivity often begin before the instrument starts collecting data.

METER application specialists Leo Rivera and Shaun Weldon discuss how sample preparation, air entry, soil depth, uncertainty estimates, and soil cracks can affect the way measurements are collected or interpreted. Office Hours 20 also looks at practical questions involving HYPROP and SATURO.

Less work. More discovery.

New enhancements to the popular ZL6 data logger make field data collection easier. An enlarged built-in solar panel, six rechargeable batteries, and storage for over 80,000 records reduce the stress of extended deployments. Configure the device on-site using a Bluetooth(r) or USB connection and test cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity to ZENTRA Cloud before you leave. And, the automated data uploads mean you can spend less time on site visits to download data or verify everything is functioning and more time staying focused on the work your data supports.

Understanding water and energy exchange at field scale requires measurements that are difficult to expand across multiple sites.

ATMOS 51 uses the variance Bowen ratio method to directly measure actual evapotranspiration (ET). Its compact setup can support researchers who want to supplement an eddy covariance footprint, add measurement locations, or pair actual ET with precipitation and soil moisture data to study water movement through a system.
