DOOM SCROLLING, & THE DEATH OF SOCIAL SOCIAL MEDIA!
Y'all, can we talk about what the hell has happened to social media? Because I'm beginning to wonder if we're all just standing around in a digital ghost town, talking to bots while the algorithm laughs its ass off!
I remember when social media was actually SOCIAL!!
When you logged on to see what your friends and family were doing? When you could share a picture, tell a story, post about your day, and actually have conversations with the people you cared about?
Remember leaving a comment because you genuinely wanted to talk to someone? Hitting the LIKE button because you enjoyed their picture? Laughing at their jokes, celebrating their victories, offering a little encouragement when life kicked them in the teeth?
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ALL THAT?
Now we have doom scrolling, endless reels, suspicious accounts, bots commenting on everything, and a dashboard that seems determined to show us EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT WE ACTUALLY CAME HERE TO SEE!
I don't need 47 suggested posts from strangers.
I don't need the same video recycled 19 different ways.
I don't need a dashboard full of content the algorithm thinks I should like and or what I need to post more of.
I WANT TO SEE MY FRIENDS!
I want to read their posts. I want to know how they're doing. I want to see their pictures, hear their stories, celebrate their milestones, and check in when they go quiet.
And here's the kicker…
We can have hundreds or thousands of friends and followers, yet never see their posts unless we go looking for them. Meanwhile, we're fed an endless stream of suggested content designed to keep us scrolling.
And before anybody says, "Well, you need to engage more!" —
HOW THE HELL ARE WE SUPPOSED TO ENGAGE WITH POSTS WE NEVER SEE?
It's a vicious little circle.
The platforms use algorithms to rank what appears in our feeds, including content from people we don't follow. That isn't a conspiracy theory; Meta openly explains how its recommendation systems work. But somewhere along the way, discovering new content seems to have taken priority over simply keeping up with the people we already know!
Friends wondering why nobody comments anymore.
People scrolling for hours but barely speaking to another human being.
Real people feeling invisible on a platform supposedly built to connect us.
Whatever happened to simply being SOCIAL on social media?
Whatever happened to visiting a friend's page, reading their posts, leaving a comment, and showing a little love without having to fight through a mountain of suggested content first?
And when did we become so accustomed to scrolling past one another that we forgot there's an actual HUMAN BEING on the other side of that screen?
Maybe it's time we quit letting the damn dashboard decide who matters in our lives.
Go visit your friends' pages.
Read their posts.
Hit that LIKE button.
Share a little kindness.
If someone crosses your mind, go tell them hello!
Don't just watch 3 seconds of the reels.
I want CONNECTION.
I want CONVERSATION.
I want COMMUNITY.
I want my friends back in my feed!
And if you're reading this, don't just scroll past and disappear into the digital abys.
Tell me I'm not the only one who's tired of fighting the algorithm just to find my own damn friends! Oh but let's not forget our challenges of commenting on 100 comments we barely can get and the 1500 interaction they want us to get.
Good luck my friends!
