August 10 Sale Update

Once again, we’re starting our sale update with a big thank you to our sheep and goat consignors! You continue to fill the pens each week with quality lambs and goats, and we truly appreciate your continued support. Keep them coming!

Hay numbers were down this week, but the prices were good. Round bales held steady at $65, while square bales reached $13.50, with a good number of stacks bringing over $9.00 per bale.

The Clay Ranch Quarter Horses Select Sale is getting closer, and the Mullin family wants your input! They’ve posted all of the potential sale horses on Facebook and are letting you help decide who makes the final lineup. Take a look, cast your vote, and then mark your calendar for September 26 — it’ll be fun to see if your pick makes it to Ravenna!

Don’t forget — our Miscellaneous Items & Poultry Sale is this Saturday, August 15!

Also, a quick schedule reminder: August is our last month with two Miscellaneous Items & Poultry Sales. From September through December, these sales will be held on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month only. Be sure to make a note of the change so you don’t miss a sale!

Dairy Sale — August 20

We are still taking consignments for our August 20 Dairy Sale. Text or call your consignments to:

As always, thank you for trusting us with your livestock and supporting Ravenna Auction week after week. We were also pretty thankful to finally see some much-needed rain make its way through the area. After weeks of watching the skies and hoping for it, the crops, pastures and orchards finally got a good drink — and we know there were plenty of farmers happy to see it!

August 3 Sale Update

We started August with plenty of sunshine—and sheep! Ninety-nine head, to be exact. Our sheep consignors really stepped up yesterday and brought us a great run.

We also had a nice offering of 121 fat cattle and 185 cows. On the market side, calf prices, fat cattle, and cows were all stronger than last week.

It was a solid way to kick off August, and hopefully the market gives us plenty more reasons to be optimistic in the weeks ahead.

Upcoming Sale Schedule

Poultry & Miscellaneous Sale — August 15
Dairy Sale — August 20

And, of course, don’t forget the Clay Ranch Quarter Horses Select Sale on September 26!

Top Holstein Steer: $231

July 27 Sale Update

Can you believe we just wrapped up our last sale in July? We sure can’t.

Both our slaughter cattle numbers and prices are definitely lower than where they started the month. The industry talk is that, at least locally, August markets are expected to be steady to lower. With JBS closing its Souderton plant and the large fire at Agri Star in Iowa this morning, more cattle are expected to be diverted to JBS Plainwell and surrounding packing plants as processors adjust to the reduced capacity. Add in sluggish beef sales, and we’re likely looking at another month of softer slaughter cattle prices.

Now on to something a little more exciting!

Plans are coming together for the Clay Ranch Quarter Horses Select Sale. The buyers’ hats have been ordered, the food truck is lined up, and we’re already tossing around ideas for the Top Seller gifts. If you haven’t already, mark your calendar for Saturday, September 26. It’ll be here before we know it!

And now it’s time for a little bragging.

Guess where the Muskegon County Fair Grand Champion Feeder Beef was purchased?

That’s right…at a Monday night sale right here at Ravenna Auction!

Mindy Hacker of Howell consigned a cow along with a 215-pound black calf. Scott VanEns looked through all that black hair and said he thought there was a really good-framed calf underneath. Turns out he was absolutely right, because Claire went on to win Grand Champion!

Congratulations, Claire! And thank you to Mindy and Scott for supporting our auction and proving once again that you never know what kind of quality will come through the ring on a Monday night.

Special Thank You

We would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the businesses that purchase fair animals year after year. Your continued support of these young exhibitors is what makes our local fair livestock sales such a success. The investment you make in these kids, their projects, and the future of agriculture does not go unnoticed, and we sincerely appreciate your commitment to our local fairs and 4-H and FFA programs.

And Scott…congratulations on your own championship as a member of the 2026 Egg Toss Champions! 😂

Top Sellers of the Week

• Top Colored/Crossbred Steer: $236 – Sold by Hazekamp Premier Foods, Muskegon
Raised by Eli Abend, Ravenna
Congratulations to Eli on raising the Muskegon County Fair Grand Champion Beef Steer!

• Top Holstein Steer: $224 – Mast Farms Inc., Zeeland

• Top Cow: $181 – Riedstra Dairy LLC, Mendon

• Top Holstein Heiferette: $190 – Swisslane Farms, Alto

As always, thank you for trusting us with your livestock. We truly appreciate your continued support. And finally…thank goodness someone’s rain dance worked! We hope everyone received some much-needed rain yesterday. Here’s hoping August brings greener pastures and better markets.
