May 11 Sale Update
Field work is going on in full force, and it showed in our fat cattle and cow numbers — but the prices also showed the lack of cattle movement.
Lucky for us, our sheep and goat consignors helped make up the difference. And we can’t leave out our calf consignors — numbers have been slowly creeping back up, with 61 nice quality calves through the ring.
For our feeder cattle buyers: if you didn’t hear Ed’s announcement at the sale, and you are looking for good feeder cattle, you won’t want to miss the next two Monday sales.
On May 18, we will be selling feeder calves from both Riedstra Dairy LLC and VanOeffelen Farm Service. Both farms will be offering a quality mix of Holstein and black cross feeder calves. Watch for additional details and photos on both consignments later this week.
On May 25, we will be selling feeder calves from Riedstra Dairy LLC and John Byma Jr. Additional information on both consignments will be posted closer to sale day.
If you have feeder cattle to sell — the next two weeks is the time to do it. Text your information to Tracy @ (616)262-1948 or Ashley @ (616)262-1949 to get them advertised.
We also want to take a minute to focus on something a longtime cattle buyer talked to us about a few years back: consistency and opportunity.
Over the years, he believed that if you want overall consistency with your prices, selling on Monday is your best bet. Yes, there will be weeks here and there when the market may jump midweek, but for the most part, Monday is the day to stick with.
His second piece of advice for sellers was this: why offer your livestock to just one buyer’s price by selling direct, when you have the opportunity to put them in the ring in front of at least four or five buyers?
Yes, we understand convenience can be a factor — but we feel price should be the main goal.
We are definitely glad our top sellers, and all of our consignors, feel that way too. Not to mention, supporting a local business is always important!
