May 11 Sale Update

Field work is going on in full force, and it showed in our fat cattle and cow numbers — but the prices also showed the lack of cattle movement.

Lucky for us, our sheep and goat consignors helped make up the difference. And we can’t leave out our calf consignors — numbers have been slowly creeping back up, with 61 nice quality calves through the ring.

For our feeder cattle buyers: if you didn’t hear Ed’s announcement at the sale, and you are looking for good feeder cattle, you won’t want to miss the next two Monday sales.

On May 18, we will be selling feeder calves from both Riedstra Dairy LLC and VanOeffelen Farm Service. Both farms will be offering a quality mix of Holstein and black cross feeder calves. Watch for additional details and photos on both consignments later this week.

On May 25, we will be selling feeder calves from Riedstra Dairy LLC and John Byma Jr. Additional information on both consignments will be posted closer to sale day.

If you have feeder cattle to sell — the next two weeks is the time to do it. Text your information to Tracy @ (616)262-1948 or Ashley @ (616)262-1949 to get them advertised.

We also want to take a minute to focus on something a longtime cattle buyer talked to us about a few years back: consistency and opportunity.

Over the years, he believed that if you want overall consistency with your prices, selling on Monday is your best bet. Yes, there will be weeks here and there when the market may jump midweek, but for the most part, Monday is the day to stick with.

His second piece of advice for sellers was this: why offer your livestock to just one buyer’s price by selling direct, when you have the opportunity to put them in the ring in front of at least four or five buyers?

Yes, we understand convenience can be a factor — but we feel price should be the main goal.

We are definitely glad our top sellers, and all of our consignors, feel that way too. Not to mention, supporting a local business is always important!

Sellers of the Week

Top Colored/Crossbred Steer: $260.00 – Jeff Fuehring, Hart
Top Holstein Steer: $229.00 – Triick Farms, Grand Rapids
Top Bull: $272.00 – Slater Farms LLC, Holton
Top Cow: $177.00 – Tom VanderZanden, Hart

As always, thank you for your continued support and trust in Ravenna Auction. We appreciate your business and wish everyone a safe planting season ahead.

MAY 4 SALE UPDATE

We didn’t just start May strong… we came out swinging.

Our second highest grossing sale to date — and when you combine good numbers with high prices, that’s how records get broke.

Let’s start with the small stock:
51 sheep and 28 goats through the ring.
Both consignors and buyers showed up ready — quality in, competitive bidding, and it turned into strong, honest prices across the board.

Feeder cattle kept that same momentum.

We had some really nice groups come through, and buyers stepped up:

* Top light calf (370 #) – $525
* Top heavier calf (430 #) – $515

Good cattle bring good money — plain and simple.

Hogs were stronger, topping at $70.

Fat cattle stayed hot as well:

* Top Colored – $255
* Top Holstein – $241

As many of you have likely seen, the U.S. Department of Justice and United States Department of Agriculture announced they will be addressing competition and consolidation concerns in the cattle markets involving the “Big 4.”

After speaking with a closely involved source, they feel that collusion is found far more often at your four corner gas stations than in the meatpacking industry today. The continued lack of cattle on the market — which is driving these higher prices — is leaving very little opportunity for unfair practices.

We’ll be watching closely to see how that investigation unfolds and what it could mean for the market in the weeks ahead.

TOP SELLERS OF THE WEEK

* Top Colored/Crossbred Steer: $255 – Burdick Farms, Marne
* Top Holstein Steer: $241 – Old Pike Farms LLC, Holland
* Top Cow: $190 – John Schaendorf Dairy LLC, Hopkins
* Top Holstein Heiferette: $199 – John Schaendorf Dairy LLC, Hopkins

Overall, a good, solid market from top to bottom.
As always, thank you for trusting us with your livestock — this market runs on you, and we’re proud to be part of it.

If you haven’t made it out to Plow Days, you’re definitely missing out — and there’s still time to catch a glimpse of something most people today never got the chance to experience. Across from Shaner Nursery in Rockford, you can step back in time and watch farming the way it used to be done.

A team of horses in the field, fresh dirt turning over, and a way of farming that built this country long before GPS and auto-steer ever showed up. Most people today will never get the chance to see something like this in person — and that’s exactly what makes events like Plow Days worth the trip. 🚜🐴

APRIL 27, 2026 SALE UPDATE

We wrapped up the month of April with big fat cattle numbers and record prices, while cow numbers were a little lighter and the market softened up just a touch.

And according to everyone at the hay sale… we may have also wrapped up April with record winds too. Of course right at 3:30 the wind picked up and the rain started rolling in. Typical Monday sale weather, right?

All in all, April was a good month for us — and we hope it was a good month for our customers too.

Over the weekend we had one of our “catch up/work calls” with our favorite Canadians and we’re hoping to have some information out later this week regarding a few things we’re working on for the 2026 Clay Ranch Quarter Horses Select Sale. We’re looking forward to getting some feedback from all of you!

MAY SALE SCHEDULE

🐔 Misc. Item & Poultry Sales — May 2 & May 16

📍 11500 Shaner Ave, Rockford
