A HUGE thank you to the Cottey College Athletic Department for choosing to spend their Day of Service with us at Bell Bacon Farms! 💛🐴

These ladies came ready to WORK, and we are absolutely blown away by how much they accomplished! They painted our run-in and front gate, w**d whacked around the arena, cleaned water troughs, disassembled bunk beds, moved furniture into our main cabin, and helped us tackle several projects that have been sitting on our to-do list. 👩🏼‍🎨🫟

My grandma used to always tell us, “Many hands make light work,” and today was the perfect reminder of just how true that is. ❤️ With so many extra hands willing to jump in, projects that would have taken us days were knocked out in no time!

The difference is incredible, and everything looks SO good! 🤩 There’s always something that needs done around the farm, and having a group willing to spend their day helping us make it better was such a gift.

We are SO thankful for their hard work, positive attitudes, and willingness to spend their Day of Service with us. 🌼🐥💙

A huge THANK YOU to the incredible volunteers who gave their time, energy, and hearts to our campers this summer! ❤️🐴

From helping kids catch, groom, and tack their horses, to leading riders who needed a little extra confidence, helping with crafts and activities, and jumping in wherever they were needed—you helped make camp possible!

We are so grateful for every early morning, hot afternoon, dirty boot, tangled mane, and smiling face. Thank you for loving our campers and horses so well! ❤️

☀️🐴 IS IT TOO HOT TO RIDE? DO THE MATH FIRST!

Just because your horse is willing to work in the heat doesn’t mean it’s safe.

One of the easiest ways to estimate how efficiently your horse can cool himself is to add the actual air temperature (°F) + relative humidity (%).

🌡️ TEMPERATURE + HUMIDITY = YOUR NUMBER

Here’s a quick guide:

Temp + Humidity What It Means

Under 130 🟢 Lower risk — horses can cool themselves relatively efficiently

130–150 🟡 Use caution — cooling ability is decreased

Over 150 🔴 High risk — cooling ability is greatly reduced; avoid riding when possible

Over 180 🚨 DANGEROUS — conditions can become life-threatening with exertion

☀️ HERE'S AN EXAMPLE:
It’s 100°F outside with 58% relative humidity.
100 + 58 = 158
🔴 That puts your horse OVER 150.

Even though 58% humidity may not sound terrible, when combined with a 100°F air temperature, your horse has a much harder time getting rid of the heat produced during exercise.

DON'T FORGET THE INDIVIDUAL HORSE

These numbers are a guideline, not a guarantee of safety.
Older horses, overweight horses, horses that aren't conditioned to the heat, horses with long hair coats, and especially horses with anhidrosis can develop heat stress much sooner.

When temperatures are extreme, consider riding early in the morning, shortening your workout, decreasing the intensity, taking frequent breaks and providing plenty of water.

Sometimes the safest training decision you can make is simply:
It's too hot. We'll ride another day.

And just like that… our 2026 summer camp season has come to an end. ❤️🐴

It’s hard to put into words what this summer has meant to us. Last year, we welcomed 25 campers to Bell Bacon Farms. This year, that number more than doubled to 55 campers! Even more exciting, we took a huge leap and hosted our very first three weeks of sleep away camp… and two of them sold out!

When we look back at where we started and where we are now, it’s pretty incredible to see just how much can change in one year.

This season wasn’t just about growing our camp program — we grew ourselves and the farm right along with it. We brought electricity out to the farm, installed several automatic waterers, purchased a bunkhouse, added another bathroom, and even welcomed another mare to our herd. 🐴

There were plenty of long days, late nights, muddy boots, sweaty horses, loads of laundry, meals to cook, water troughs to fill, and a million little things happening behind the scenes…
But then there were 55 kids learning to ride, gaining confidence, making friends, getting dirty, trying new things, and creating memories with horses that we hope they’ll carry with them for a very long time.

We are so incredibly thankful for every family who trusted us with their children this summer, every camper who walked through our gates, every volunteer and extra set of hands who helped us along the way, and every person who has supported us as Bell Bacon Farms continues to grow. ❤️

We’re tired, we’re proud, and we’re already dreaming about what comes next. And don’t worry… we’re not going anywhere! 🤠 Keep watching our page because we’ll continue hosting mini camps throughout the school year, and we can’t wait to see some familiar faces — and hopefully plenty of new ones — back at the farm!

Another unforgettable week of Sleep Away Camp is in the books! 🌊🐠💙

Our Under the Sea Week was packed full of adventure from start to finish! Campers spent plenty of time riding and bonding with their horses, but the fun didn’t stop there.

We cooled off at the Butler Aquatic Center , got creative during an incredible art class with Mayhem & Mirth, splashed around at the YMCA, and wrapped up one of our outings with a trip to Ft. Scott Cinema to watch Trolls!

There were lots of laughs, new friendships, unforgettable memories, and of course, plenty of horse kisses along the way. 💙 We couldn’t have asked for a better group of campers!

Fear showed up every day this week… but today, courage showed up too. 💪🏼

After days of trying to work through the nerves, he finally loped for the very first time! The smile on his face says it all.❤️

This is why we do what we do. Not just to teach kids how to ride horses, but to help them discover they’re capable of doing hard things. Sometimes the biggest win isn’t the lope itself—it’s believing you can! Congrats Aaron, we’re so proud of you! 🐎👏
