Double J Farm We raise free-range chickens and katahdin hair sheep, and can do honey bee swarm removals.

We also make lard and/or tallow based natural soaps, ordered individually or by the custom loaf. Our goal is to be self-sustaining and an asset and resource to the local community. We raise free-range chickens and turkeys, registered Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, and honey bees. We practice sustainable and ethical methods in both our animal husbandry and crop production- using no synthetic fertilize

Brahma chickens really are some of the friendliest birds. Last year I spent time handling the chicks; petting them, ruffling their feathers, hand feeding them. This year? None of that, but they’re still jumping on my arms, my feet, and trying to eat my shoelaces. I have to be careful not to trip over them or let them follow me out of their field. If you want a handful of good egg layers who love to cuddle, Brahmas may be the way to go. Plus, I just love the feathered feet!

I cleaned up the last of the garlic tonight and brought it into the kitchen. From here, I’ll sort and separate: the largest bulbs for planting in 2-3 months, the damaged or poorly papered bulbs for eating soonest, and the rest will go in a cool dark place and be used as needed. The bulbis (the actual seed of the garlic plant) will be scattered among our fall greens in the garden and I’ll pull them early in the spring for green garlic.

I’m still deciding which variety and type are my favorite, so I have ordered some more to plant with the best of this years’. I have always prioritized clove size and ease of peeling, but since I’ve switched to the smash and unwrap method of dealing with small cloves, my priorities are storage duration and flavor. I’d love to hear what your favorite garlic is, if you have one!

I remember my mom always saying that mint and lamb pair well together. But I was a kid, and this was imported lamb and mint jelly. I didn’t like either one 😂. Most of my life I avoided lamb either because of the taste or the cost. Finally a few years ago I sampled local lamb and loved it! I enjoyed it so much, I bought a small herd to raise myself. And now, every time I cook lamb, I run to the garden to pick some mint 😍

It’s taken me 2 nights of evening tv time to remove this thyme and these elderberries from their stems. The thyme is already dry and heading to a jar, the elderberries are heading to the dehydrator for storage and later use. Believe me, whatever you’re paying for thyme, it’s not enough 😂😂😂

These are 2 eggs that you will NOT find in your cartons! 😂😂😂 But we do have lots of beautiful nutritious eggs available. Message or comment if you need eggs tomorrow, we have extra this week! $4/dozen or 4/$15. They’re all within a week old, so you can stock up and enjoy them for a while unlike the month+ old eggs from the grocery store.

Spruce is the last sheep to shed the last of her winter coat, and she needed a little help. She was starting to grow dreadlocks 😂, but we we got her cleaned up. She’s a sweet girl who still loves her scratches!

This might be the prettiest egg we’ve ever gotten. 😍

When I hatch, I select eggs with speckling because I like it so much! That’s why you’ll see a lot of speckled eggs in your cartons, even some faint tan speckles on the blue eggs.
