We offer both consulting and hands-on restoration services. Historic Design Consulting LLC assists home and business owners preserve and restore their historic buildings. HDC offers a variety of consulting services, including developing authentic exterior and interior color schemes, interior decoration, and the selection of millwork, including doors, windows and molding, that are appropriate for the age and style of your building. We can also help design period appropriate porches and exterior ornaments as well as develop maintenance plans that will address the special needs of older homes.

This week’s architectural term is SPALLING. Rather than an architectural feature I thought I would focus on a type of damage or decay. Spalling is the flaking, peeling or delamination of the surface from masonry. Although there are many causes for spalling, the most common is water infiltration. When water saturates brick, stone or concrete and freezes, the pressure from the expanding ice can cause surfaces to pop or slough off. A similar thing can happen from salt in solution when it crystallizes.

First phase of the West Concord, MN door restoration.

We just completed the first phase of restoring the entry on the West Concord, MN school. The doors were in poor condition but we were able to bring them back to life with wood repairs, replacement panels, custom molding, paint and finish repairs. We will return to repaint the frames, reglaze the transom and complete cleaning and repairing the interior finish.

My father took my brother and me to Dutton’s Cave many years ago and I remember thinking even as a little guy that this must be the most beautiful place in existence. Ever since I’ve wanted to return and I finally did today. Although I’ve traveled quite a bit and seen many wonders of the natural world, today’s visit didn’t disappoint. Today you can’t enter the cave like I did as a kid (due to white nose syndrome affecting the bats), the springs still flow and it remains a beautiful, peaceful place.
