Alaska Gold Seafood

Alaska Gold Seafood Sustainable, wild caught seafood from a fishermen-owned co-op. Hand harvested by hook & line.

Alaska Gold Seafood is caught by members of Seafood Producers Cooperative, a fishermen-owned co-op. This edition of Wheelhouse Wednesday features a boat frequently seen on our docks, the F/V Shari Ann, captained by Frederick Phillips. Some of these images include close-ups of Fred removing and documenting tags for the NOAA Fisheries Sablefish Tagging Program which tracks movement, growth and abundance of Alaska Sablefish. This program helps document the movement and proliferation of sablefish throughout the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and Aleutian Islands, and helps scientists determine a healthy quota for harvest to keep this fishery sustainable.

Spreading the word on this beautiful book about the folks who bring the world food. Friend of our co-op Tele Aadsen, who fishes on the F/V Nerka, is a co-editor of this collection of poetry and prose from contributors who work the land and sea of the Cascadia bioregion as farmers, orchard workers, kelp harvesters, field biologists, fisherfolks, and more. Several other friends of our co-op also contributed to the book: Mariah Warren, former F/V Dakota tender captain, Kat Murphy, who fishes on the F/V Aloma, and artist Adrienne Wilber, part of the F/V Alexa K family, a longtime co-op boat.

It’s Meet The Fleet Monday. And this Meet The Fleet presents an unusual look at life behind the scenes in Sitka, Alaska.

Kaleb Aldred has had the Anna J for over 30 years and he’s been a loyal co-op fisherman during much of that time. He and his partner Andrea Fraga help run Middle Island Gardens on Middle Island, which sits right out in front of Sitka, and they sell organic produce in Sitka. Andrea also runs the Pacific High garden program that provides organic produce for Pacific High and other local schools. So, in addition to providing wonderful seafood for our customers, Kaleb and Andrea bring beautiful veggies to Sitka. Feeding people is what we do! In some of these shots, we see them working on the Anna J in Sitka’s haulout. Having a boat is constant work. And the haulout provides a space for boats to get shipshape.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve posted, but we’re back. And we’re here to celebrate Wheelhouse Wednesday, a look at the people behind the fish and the boats on which they operate. Here we have Mark Holst, who you’ve seen in previous posts showing us careful handling of king salmon on his boat the F/V October. He also helps run his father’s boat the F/V New Venture, fishing for halibut and black cod. Here he is on the New Venture with crew and fellow co-op member Jesse Warren who also runs his own boat the April L. In general, it takes a little bigger boat and a little bigger crew to fish halibut and black cod in often turbulent offshore waters, whereas a salmon troller can fish alone. We have Mark and Jesse with New Venture crew Stephanie Warren and Jamie Wladyka.

Welcome to this evening’s installment of our first Wheelhouse Wednesday of June! This week we’re taking you into the wheelhouse of the F/V Ocean Oasis with Captain Lucas Skordahl. Lucas has been a lifelong Sitkan and a long time co-op member. He’s not only a skilled and successful fisherman (we call those guys Highliners up here 😉) he’s also a devoted husband to his lovely wife, Julie, and father to 2 pretty great kids. Stay tuned for some more behind the scenes images from this boat and her crew!
