Cow size - Interesting topic, sometimes a heated debate.

This is our opinion, so take it for what it's worth, but to us, the ideal cow size is what works for your environment, whether that is a bigger type cow or a smaller one. If she breeds back, raises a good calf, and is efficient in doing so, then that's ideal. But let's discuss what I keep reading and hearing on podcasts. I see articles out there in publications and from other seed stock producers who are pushing the smaller type cows, in fact I see over and over again stating that the 1100 lbs cow is ideal. They say they are more efficient and can produce more pounds per acre. This all really sounds good. But there is more to the story. When you select for a smaller cow, you aren't just getting a smaller frame score. You are also typically getting a cow who is shorter in body length, a frailer made cow, and the list keeps going. Yes, you can select cows that are smaller framed that do have good length, and aren't frail made, but then the cow isn't going to be the "ideal" 1100 lbs these articles keep talking about. We purchase thousands of steer calves every fall and winter to go onto feed. The feeders tell us they need them to weigh at least 1500 lbs and really want them to be bigger when they go to harvest. You can't get that from a 1100 lbs cow, and if your calves don't weigh what your buyer wants them to finish at, then they probably won't be your buyer next year.

Our ideal mature cow size for our environment is in the 1350 lbs to 1450 lbs range. Some may call that big, some may not. I just don't like how the so called "professionals" give their opinion as fact.

This is one of the biggest achievements PVF Red Angus has been part of to date! While we do not personally exhibit cattle, we believe cattle bred right should excel anywhere—from the pasture to the show ring. 🌾🐂

Our focus will always be functional, maternal cattle that make profitable bulls & females for commercial cattlemen, while still having the look and quality to compete with the best. 💪

Some Pennsylvania feedlots now truck cattle nine hours to Michigan since JBS shut its 52-year-old Souderton plant.

That plant handled about 2,000 head a day until it closed Aug. 14. The nearest JBS plant taking those cattle now is in Plainwell, Michigan, 500 to 600 miles farther.

If you've hauled cattle, you know what nine hours does. They lose about 4 percent of their weight on the ride. On a 1,400-pound steer, that's 56 pounds gone.

Freight plus shrink runs about $100 a head, one feeder told Lancaster Farming.

If you fed cattle in Pennsylvania, would you keep hauling to Michigan or get out of the fat cattle business?

This is hands-on, outdoor cattle work—helping with daily herd checks, pasture and fence monitoring, calving and newborn care, cattle handling, feeding and more. 🚜🌱
