The proof is in. 🐂

Washington announced more imported beef to bring down prices at the grocery store.

Here is what actually happened.

The American Farm Bureau Federation tracked 80/20 ground beef at 41 grocery stores in 22 states starting at Labor Day. The average price dropped 16 cents a pound. Most stores did not change their price at all.

So the consumer got next to nothing.

The American cattle rancher got hit. That same report puts losses at up to $300 to $400 per head after cattle prices fell on the news of an additional 300,000 metric tons of imported beef.

Read that again. The announcement moved the cattle market. It did not move the price of your hamburger.

Call it what you want. We call it market manipulation. The folks raising American beef paid for it, and the family at the meat counter never saw the savings.

The real fix is not more foreign beef. It is rebuilding the American cow herd.

Want to know where your beef comes from and who your money goes to? Buy it from somebody you can shake hands with.

Starting in the cattle business in 2026? Here's where we'd begin. 🐂

Before you buy a single head, look at two things: your goal, and what you actually have available to work with.

Ask yourself:

1. Do you want to breed and raise cattle, or do you want to finish them? Those are two different businesses.

2. Who is your buyer? Decide that before the cattle ever hit your place.

3. Are you going to direct market your product?

4. Where will you harvest your livestock?

Answer those four honestly and the right model for you starts to show itself.

Over the next few posts we'll walk through each model and lay out the pros and cons of each one.

What questions do you have about getting started? Drop them below and we'll work them into the series.

Before we opened Primal Acres, I owned a construction and forestry business. This mini excavator was the most important piece of equipment we had.

It was small enough to take almost anywhere. It could dig and reach further than most mini excavators, and it was heavy enough to run a forestry mulching head.

It's been sitting over in Hayden, and we thought it had a cracked hydraulic control bank. Today we needed to move it, and we found a loose hose hidden back behind the other hoses. We tightened it up, and that seems to have fixed the problem.

What a relief.

Soon I'll bring it out here to the ranch and get going on a few projects, like fixing frost-free hydrants and grading a few areas.

I'm so thankful for my past experiences, and for the fact that this piece of equipment is back in the lineup.

A Corriente steer earns his keep more than once.

These cattle are tough, easy-keeping, and built to work. A lot of them spend their early years as roping and sport cattle, putting in honest time in the arena and helping cowboys and kids alike sharpen their craft. They graze rough country other cattle won't thrive on and ask for very little in return.

Then comes the last leg of the journey. This group of steers is headed on to be grain finished, and they're going to make some incredible beef.

One animal, a whole lot of purpose. Nothing wasted, and a lot to be thankful for along the way.

Most people raising livestock do not have a price problem. They have a math problem.

Margin in this business is thin, and it gets decided long before sale day.

You make your money when you buy. Pay too much going in and no amount of feed or hard work fixes it on the way out.

Feed is the biggest bill you will write. If you do not know your cost of gain, you do not know if that animal is making you money or eating it.

Then come the costs nobody likes to count:

• Death loss. One dead animal takes the profit from several live ones.
• Shrink. Pounds you fed for that never cross the scale.
• Freight. Every mile comes out of your end.
• Processing. Kill fee, cut and wrap, and the wait to get a date.
• Interest. Borrowed money eats every day the animal is on feed.
• Your time. If you never pay yourself, you do not have a margin. You have a hobby.

Know your break-even before you buy, not after. Write it down. If the numbers do not work on paper, they will not work in the pen.

Selling direct can keep more of the dollar on your side of the fence. It also means you take on the marketing, the customers, the hauling and the freezer space. More margin, more work. Nothing is free.

The ones who last in this business are not always the ones with the best cattle or hogs. They are the ones who know their numbers.

"Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds." Proverbs 27:23
